After I finished uni I took 11 weeks to travel to the most remote parts of the world I could think of. This section covers the trip from Sydney through Beijing to Ulaan Baatar overland, then to the far western region of Mongolia before crossing the border by speeding Corolla to central Siberia. Though there are cars with meters, any driver is a potential cabbie. To summon a ride, a person need only hold his arm out, flail it slightly, and soon enough a willing driver will pull up. The going rate is 400T/KM (about $0.45/mile). The driver in the video crossed a river, flooded his car, then climbed a steep dirt road to get us to our destination.

The Badain Jaran Desert is a desert in China. It spans the provinces of Gansu, Ningxia and Inner Mongolia with an area of 49000 sq. kilometers. This desert is home to the tallest stationary dunes on Earth. Some of the dunes reach a height of 500 meters. The desert features over 100 spring-fed lakes that lie between the dunes, some of which are fresh while others are saline. These lakes give the desert its name which is Mongolian for "mysterious lakes". This video is a preview of a series of video recordings produced during a travel on the Chinese Silk Road in 2010 and 2011. The travel comprised following locations: Xian, Lanzhou, Jiajuguan, Dunhuang, Xining, Golmud, Xiahe, Tongren, the latter ones historical Tibetan areas.
