Mongolia Монгол улс Mongol uls
Duration : 0 Seconds

Mongolia / Монгол улс is a landlocked country in East and Central Asia. It borders Russia to the north and the People's Republic of China to the south, east and west. Although Mongolia does not share a border with Kazakhstan, its western-most point is only 38 kilometres (24 mi) from Kazakhstan's eastern tip. Ulan Bator, the capital and largest city, is home to about 38% of the population. Mongolia's political system is a parliamentary republic. The area of what is now Mongolia has been ruled by various nomadic empires, including the Xiongnu, the Xianbei, the Rouran, the Gökturks, and others. The Mongol Empire was founded by Genghis Khan in 1206. After the collapse of the Yuan Dynasty, the Mongols returned to their earlier patterns. In the 16th and 17th centuries, Mongolia came under the influence of Tibetan Buddhism. At the end of the 17th century, most of Mongolia had been incorporated into the area ruled by the Qing Dynasty. During the collapse of the Qing Dynasty in 1911, Mongolia declared independence, but had to struggle until 1921 to firmly establish de-facto independence from the Republic of China, and until 1945 to gain international recognition. As a consequence, it came under strong Russian and Soviet influence: In 1924, the Mongolian People's Republic was declared, and Mongolian politics began to follow the same patterns as Soviet politics of the time. After the breakdown of communist regimes in Eastern Europe in late 1989, Mongolia saw its own Democratic ...

Mongolian Presidential Candidates Running a Tight Race
Duration : 110 Seconds

Candidates in a dead heat Mongolian presidential election have cast their ballots. Meanwhile, election officials are urging the media not to report on unconfirmed fraud allegations. Its a tight race between incumbent Mongolian president Nambariin Enkhbayar of the ruling Mongolian People's Revolutionary Party (MPRP), and opposition Democratic Party (DP) candidate Tsakhiagiin Elbegdorj. Residents and investors alike are hoping the election will mean that Mongolia can start to tap its vast mineral wealth and set about lifting its people out of poverty. Unrest and ensuing legal struggles following last years parliamentary elections left five dead. Any similar disruption during the presidential election could postpone approval of a draft investment agreement on developing the pivotal Oyu Tolgoi copper and gold project. Mongolia has been hit hard by falling mineral prices. Incumbent Enkhbayar has pledged to beef-up the rule of law while his opponent Elbegdorj promises a change and the fighting of corruption. Elbegdorj says he feels very positive. [Tsakhiagiin Elbegdorj, DP candidate]: "Yes, good, I'm good, I'm confident (The people) are participating actively. I wish you health and all the best. Thank you." The latest survey puts the two parties in a statistical tie. Results may come as soon as Sunday or early Monday, but could take longer if it is a tight race. The country's general election committee is urging the media not to report on any unconfirmed allegations of fraud ...

The Years of Rice and Salt Trailer.wmv
Duration : 118 Seconds

Video I made for my English class. It's a trailer for the excellent novel by Kim Stanley Robinson, "The Years of Rice and Salt". It is light-years from doing the book any justice, and I threw it together in two hours, but seeing as there are a sum total of about 20 videos that come up when one searches "Kim Stanley Robinson", I figured I might as well see what this could get and see if I couldn't help out the writer a bit, in my own small way, as he's a brilliant one. the songs are "The Dead Heart" by Midnight Oil", and "Whisper in Time" by Bad Religion. I also used an audio clip from Monty Python, so don't sue me please. It's not mine I assure you. Thanks and enjoy.

Follow us on TWITTER: twitter.com Like us on FACEBOOK: www.facebook.com Pastures in Xiwuqi, Inner Mongolia were damaged in recent years, due to coal mining. Conflicts escalate daily with the herders and the government. Recently, Mu Rigen, an Inner Mongolian human rights activist, was intentionally hit and killed by a truck. This enraged the public and 1000 residents took to the streets in a protest. 2000 students from Xilinhot broke through blockades to demonstrate on the streets as well. According to insiders, from the night of May 22, many people came to protest near the city government in Xiwuqi, Inner Mongolia. On May 23 and 24, approximately 1000 people gathered and were in confrontation with armed police. Many people were arrested. The protest arises from a local murder case. Lately, dozens of coal-transporting trucks are driving across the pastures of the herders, destroying them. Mo Rigen, a 35-year-old herder, appealed to the government many times but was ignored. He gathered over 30 people to try and stop these gigantic trucks. In the early hours of May 11, a truck intentionally hit Mo Rigen and drove over his body and head. Mo Rigen died at the scene. Although the driver was later arrested and charged, herders' anger could not be so easily appeased. "Chinese Alliance Against Political Oppression"'s CEO, Liu Yinquan says that although China grants autonomy to areas with large ethnic populations, they are still part of the political party system. The local party ...
