UNESCO: Urgent Safeguarding List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity - 2009 URL: www.unesco.org Description: The Mongolian Tuuli is an oral tradition comprising heroic epics that run from hundreds to thousands of lines and combine benedictions, eulogies, spells, idiomatic phrases, fairy tales, myths and folk songs. They are regarded as a living encyclopaedia of Mongolian oral traditions and immortalize the heroic history of the Mongolian people. Epic singers are distinguished by their prodigious memory and performance skills, combining singing, vocal improvisation and musical composition coupled with theatrical elements. Epic lyrics are performed to musical accompaniment on instruments such as the ''morin khuur'' (horse-head fiddle) and ''tovshuur'' (lute). Epics are performed during many social and public events, including state affairs, weddings, a childs first haircut, the ''naadam'' (a wrestling, archery and horseracing festival) and the worship of sacred sites. Epics evolved over many centuries, and reflect nomadic lifestyles, social behaviours, religion, mentalities and imagination. Performing artists cultivate epic traditions from generation to generation, learning, performing and transmitting techniques within kinship circles, from fathers to sons. Through the epics, Mongolians transmit their historical knowledge and values to younger generations, strengthening awareness of national identity, pride and unity. Mongolian tuuli, or epic poetry, the most important genre in Mongolian literary history, is a vast tradition of orally composed works. Accompanied by musical instruments such as the tobshur and the choor, tuuli relates these nomadic peoples' glorious past: their ideal heroes—the bravest hunters and herdsmen—and their ideal world—rich pastures, open steppes, decorated yurts and palaces, beautiful maidens, and swift horses. The heroes keep and guard these riches, perform deeds in defense of their holdings, and, more importantly, acquire new herds and new nomadic territories. The scholarship on Mongolian epic can be traced back to the beginning of the nineteenth century.

Short clip Natsagdorj took of exiled writer Tumen and me last night (May 26 2009). There's nothing of substance to this post except that the man is, like Obama (of whom he is a fan), an original baller. He's perhaps not aware that the camera is video and not photo. But this is the face, in real time, of the man who makes sure I have my soup and get home safe, the man who Ganbat, PEN Mongolia's newest hero, knew of through the time Tumen spent in Japan--formative years that contributed to Tumen's greatest works (essays on Inner Mongolia).
