| | Mongolian artist Munkhtsetseg Jalkhaajav - interview at Schoeni Art Gallery Duration : 182 Seconds April 2012 - at Schoeni Art Gallery, Hong Kong Schoeni Art Gallery is pleased to hold the first Hong Kong solo exhibition for Mongolian artist Munkhtsetseg Jalkhaajav (who is also known as "Mugi"). As the international art scene and market continues to strive to find the new threshold of all frontiers (whether it be the visual, conceptual or financial), Mongolian artists have garnered more and more attention. Mugi is one of the most famous female contemporary artists in Ulaanbaatar (UB), Mongolia. Mugi's work is rich with what appear to be contradictions and are actually the very originality and strength of her visual expression, supporting the cohesion of her message through all three bodies of work: paintings, collages on sa paper, soft sculptures, which all are in conversation with one another both in terms of form and content. The artist for instance attributes the genesis of the sculptures to her paintings as she describes them as a three dimensional elaboration of her first craft. Depicting womanhood from the universal to the personal, coming from a standpoint of equality indigenous to Mongolian history and society, dwelling on shamanism or traditional Mongolian medicine and contemporary global unbalances with Mother Nature, Mugi uses her hands, brushes or needles to reveal her own introspection as well as the cultural one her country is still undergoing, healing personal and collective losses in the process. In stillness in her paintings, reminiscent of icon ... Tags :Munkhtsetseg Jalkhaajav, Mongolian art, Mongolian Artists, Mugi, Mongolia

| | Khoid Tsenkher cave, Mongolia Duration : 182 Seconds Rock paintings of the Khoit Tsenkher cave date back to the Upper Palaeolithic period (20000-15, 000 years ago). In one of corners of the cave measuring 2.5 m high and 1.5-2.0 m deep, numerous symbols and animals were painted overlapping each other on the ceiling and wall. A quiet standing stag was portrayed clearly among the animals. Also a standing buffalo with horus looking ahead was represented separately. In another corner of the cave, many animals including oxes, ibexes, elephants, ostriches were pictured, overlapping each other. It is interesting that dotted lines were drawn over the ostriches. On its wall in a cave hollow measuring 10 m long and 8 m wide a camel with to humbs was portrayed. Also many symbols and trees were painted at the height of 2.0-2.5 m not far from the wall, where the camel was portrayed. Lions, elephants, argali sheep, ibexes, ostriches, antelopes, camels, as well as symbols were painted with mineral-based paints of rosy and brown colours on the walls deep inside the cave. By the method of painting of different kinds of animals, their colour and view, the Khoit Tsenkher cave rock paintings show their original artistic, cultural and historical features which are different from the other rock paintings in Mongolia and her neighbouring countries. Some particular parts of the animals such as their horns, necks, humbs are depicted with an exaggerated hyper-realism typical of the Palaeolothic period. Spots adjacent to the images of goats and ... | | Khara Khoto Tangut ghost town Duration : 220 Seconds (WIKI) Khara-Khoto "black city" is a medieval Tangut city in the Ejin khoshuu of Alxa League, in western Inner Mongolia. The city was founded in 1032 and became a thriving center of Tangut Empire trade in the 11th century. There are remains of 30-foot (9.1 m)-high ramparts and 12-foot (3.7 m)-thick outer walls. The outer walls ran for some 421 m (1381 ft) east-west by 374 m (1227 ft) north-south. The walled fortress was first taken by Genghis Khan in 1226, but—contrary to a widely-circulated misunderstanding—the city continued to flourish under Mongol overlordship. In The Travels of Marco Polo, Marco Polo describes a visit to a city called Etzina or Edzina, which has been identified with Khara-Khoto. During the 1907-1909 expedition to Central Asia, in 1908, Pyotr Kuzmich Kozlov made the historical discovery of Khara-Khoto. Over 2000 books, scrolls and manuscripts in the Tangut language were uncovered. Kozlov sent ten chests of manuscripts and Buddhist objects to St. Petersburg, returning again in May 1909 for more objects. Kozlov's findings, some 3500 paintings and other objects, are in Hermitage Museum, St. Petersburg. Tags :KHARA, KOTO
