Traditional Mongolian Musical Instrument Shanz with Modern Twist Mongolian Tune - "Sandy Desert". Have you been before the "Gobi Desert"? Visit: www.mongolia.co.uk The instrument "Shanz" is a long-necked spiked lute with an oval wooden frame with snake skin covering stretched over both faces. The three strings are fixed to a bar, which is inserted in the body. The instrument is struck or plucked with a plectrum made of horn or with the fingers. As the tones do not echo, every note is struck several times.

The instrument shown off in this video is the morin khuur, a horse-head fiddle. It's a 2-stringed bowed instrument with strings made from horse tail hair, and the head is usually sculpted to look like a horse's head, hence the name. When we were in the South Gobi, we saw a Mongolian music group. After having seen the performance, we decided to try and work towards bringing them over to the UK for a couple of weeks next summer so that their talents and Mongolia are better appreciated. Three very talented and good looking Mongolian young ladies played some great music last Friday at the Steppe Inne of British Embassy. Everyone was impressed with, not just their presentation, but their music skills as well. When they first walked in, the women in attendance greeted the musicians with "oohs" and "aah". I don't believe any of us really were ready for the well dressed women to walk in... Their musical skills soon took over. The music was really quite good. Everyone in attendance seemed to listen to and enjoy their music.
