NetworkNewsToday: MONGOLIA: CREDIT & MICROFINANCE for RURAL BUSINESSES by THE WORLD BANK
Duration : 182 Seconds

NetworkNewsToday: 15 February 2010 - THE WORLD BANK: In Mongolia, a microfinance system aimed at the poor in particular is helping the far flung rural areas to develop by increasing business opportunities. Oyunbileg repairs shoes for a living in her small workshop in southern Mongolia. The money she earns is enough to support her four children and herself and even send her oldest daughter to university far away in the capital. SOUNDBITE (Mongolian) Oyunbileg, Cobbler When I started my business, I needed money, so getting a loan from the non- bank institution was the best way, I have gotten loans almost ten times, and I use the loans to buy materials to repair the shoes and with the income I can send my daughter to study in Ulaanbaatar and live and I am very happy with this loan, as the interest is very low. The loans are part Mongolias Microfinance Development fund to encourage financial growth through small businesses in the countrys rural areas where economic downturn has been most severe. Local financial institutions are responsible for disbursing the loans in order to build community capacity, says loan officer Batsukh. SOUNDBITE (Mongolian) Batsukh, Non-Financial Institution: The loans that we give are very important especially, in bayanhangor, because our interest rate is very low and the demand is very high. Oyunbileg who says she wears the mask to ward off swine flu and glue odors-has repaid her loans, and asked for more so she can expand. SOUNDBITE (Mongolian ...

Turkic and Mongol unification. Genghis Khan Empire
Duration : 144 Seconds

Orkhon Valley sprawls along the banks of the Orkhon River in Central Mongolia, some 360 km west from the capital Ulaanbaatar. For many centuries, the Orkhon Valley was viewed as the seat of the imperial power of the steppes. The first evidence comes from a stone stele with runic inscriptions, which was erected in the valley by Bilge Khan, an 8th-century ruler of the Göktürk Empire. Some 25 miles to the north of the stele, in the shadow of the sacred forest-mountain Ötüken, was his Ördü, or nomadic capital. During the Qidan domination of the valley, the stele was reinscribed in three languages, so as to record the deeds of a Qidan potentate. Mountains were considered sacred in Tengriism as an axis mundi, but Ötüken was especially sacred because the ancestor spirits of the khagans and beys resided here. Moreover, a force called qut was believed to emanate from this mountain, granting the khagan the divine right to rule the Turkic tribes.[1] Whoever controlled this valley was considered heavenly appointed leader of the Turks and could rally the tribes. Thus control of the Orkhon Valley was of the utmost strategic importance for every Turkic state. Historically every Turkic capital (Ördü) was located here for this exact reason.

The aim—to feed China's growing energy demand. Here's more. Chinese leaders met with Mongolian Prime Minister Sukhbaatar Batbold for more energy talks to satisfy China's growing energy demand. The Mongolian Prime Minister arrived in Beijing on Wednesday for his three-day visit. His aim is to clinch major mining deals and to export coal to his energy-hungry neighbor. Batbold met with chairman of the Standing Committee of the Chinese Communist Party, Wu Bangguo to discuss coal-mining ventures. Mongolia's six billion ton Tavan Tolgoi mine in the South Gobi region holds the world's biggest untapped coking coal deposit. This deposits—estimated to be about 60 billion tons—are sufficient to meet China's import needs for more than a century. China, other global investment banks, and mining corporations all want a share of Mongolia's coal deposits. But, Mongolia is cautious of being too dependent. Its plan is to build transport routes to export coal through the Russian port of Vladivostok to take pricing power away from China. Batbold is scheduled to meet with his Chinese counterpart, Wen Jiabao today.

House Prices Plunge in Chinese Ghost Town
Duration : 147 Seconds

For more news visit ☛ english.ntdtv.com Follow us on Twitter ☛ http Add us on Facebook ☛ me.lt The city of Ordos in Inner Mongolia has gained notoriety as a modern day ghost town. Blocks of homes and shops have remained empty for years. Falling prices demonstrate what can go wrong in a property boom that loses sight of real demand. There is a sense of inevitability about the crash of real estate prices in Ordos. That city is widely known as China's ghost town—for its brand new, empty office buildings, shopping plazas and apartments. The city in the steppes of Inner Mongolia borrowed the equivalent of 180 million US dollars from banks in 2004 to build a new district, Kangbashi. It includes a 79 million dollar museum. But while 1.4 million people live in greater Ordos, including the old part of town, less than 50000 live in the new district, a government official told Reuters. For a time the cranes kept building more homes in Kangbashi, despite blocks of towering new apartments sitting empty and highways that were silent during rush hour. But now even the cranes have stopped, and workers have no employment during winter. [Yang Zhouluo, Local Resident]: "The locals all loaned their money and all money has been invested in property. Now no one can sell apartments, and the money is gone." Migrant workers are fleeing the old part of the city, Dongsheng, where people actually live. And that's caused home prices to fall by almost a third. But since October, prices in other ...

BachDang River.wmv
Duration : 198 Seconds

This is rock song of old Vietnamese rock band - Da Vang, name is "Bạch Đằng Giang" - Bach Dang River. Bach Dang river is a famous river of Vietnam with historical events : - In 938, the Chinese dispatched an army to quell the Viet rebellion. Ngô Quyền calculated that the Chinese would sail down the Bạch Đằng River to unload their troops right in the middle of Giao Châu to do the most damage. To prevent this incursion, Ngô Quyền strategized and ordered the waters of Bạch Đằng embedded with thousands of large wooden pikes hidden just beneath the rising tide water. He used boats with shallow drafts to instigate and lure the Chinese toward the traps after the tide had risen. When the Chinese hundreds of ships were punctured and caught against the deadly traps, Ngô Quyền led his forces in the attack. Hundreds of trapped ships were burned and sabotaged and thousands of Chinese soldiers were killed, while some managed to retreat and were chased out relentlessly by the Viet forces. In the thick of battle, most of the Han army, including the Admiral Liu Hung-ts'ao (劉弘操; Vietnamese: Lưu Hoàng Thao; the son of the South Chinese imperator), commander of the Chinese force, were drowned. - In the Battle of Bạch Đằng in 981 CE, the invasion troops of China's newly-founded ruling dynasty, the Song Dynasty, attacked Đại Cồ Việt with both a navy at Bạch Đằng River's mouth and an infantry force at Chi Lang (Lạng Sơn). Lê Hoàn arranged two ambushes at these sites. The first ambush in Bạch ...

The Trail of Genghis Khan | Wednesdays @8PM, ABC2
Duration : 320 Seconds

In 2004, young Australian adventurer Tim Cope embarked on a journey of a lifetime -- travelling 10000 kilometres alone on horseback across the Eurasian steppe, filming this six-part series along the way. From the former Mongol capital Karakorum to the Danube River in Hungary, through diverse nations linked by nomadic roots, Tim retraced the path of the first nomads and followed the route taken by the legendary Genghis Khan as he forged his great empire. Over three and a half gruelling years, and guided by an old Kazakh wisdom -- "to understand the wolf, you must put the skin of a wolf on and look through its eyes" -- Tim lived just as the ancient nomads did. When Tim set out with his horses and his fearless dog Tigon as a companion, there was no certainty that he would complete the journey. He had no backup from a camera crew, no escape route -- and he could barely ride a horse. Ahead lay wolf-infested plateaux, the glaciated Altai Mountains, minus 50 degree temperatures on the 'starving steppe', scorching heat in the Kazakh desert, violent clashes between sedentary and nomadic societies, and the deep forests and treacherous peaks of the Carpathian Mountains. Tim would also suffer the greatest tragedy of his life, the death of his father in an accident in Australia. To cope, Tim would have to draw on everything he learnt from the nomads. The extreme challenges gave Tim empathy and insight into the nomadic way of life, and as a young man growing up, the journey became a ...

Extracting troubles - Kashagan oil field
Duration : 274 Seconds

The Kashagan oil field in the Caspian Sea is one of the largest oil fields discovered in the last few decades. The field is developed by a consortium of oil companies including Eni, Total, ExxonMobil, ConocoPhillips, Shell, Inpex and KazMunayGaz with financial support from several banks such as BNP Paribas, Citigroup, Societè Generale, Sumitomo Mitsui Banking Corporation, Mitsubishi Trust and Banking Corporation, Mizuho Bank and the ING Group. Civil society groups have been raising concerns with BNP Paribas and other financial institutions about the environmental and public health dangers associated with Kashagan. An international Fact Finding Mission in the Northern Caspian region, conducted in September 2007, found evidence of extremely high environmental and social impacts and risks, and violations of international standards, including the Equator Principles and IFC Performance Standards, in the development of Kashagans offshore and onshore operations. The Caspian Sea is the largest reserve of fresh water in Central Asia. The natural life of a whole continent depends on it. If the oil industry destroys this sea, Kazakhstan will remain behind with a deserted land and a dead sea.
