Fault Lines - Mexico's Hidden War
Duration : 1500 Seconds

The spectacular violence of Mexico's drug war grabs international attention. Some 40000 people have been killed since 2006, when President Felipe Calderon deployed Mexican military and security forces in the so-called war against the cartels -- often in gruesome and sadistic ways. But behind the headlines, under cover of impunity, a low- intensity war is being waged. In the second episode of a two-part series, Josh Rushing and the Fault Lines team travel to the state of Guerrero to investigate claims that Mexican security forces are using the drug war as a pretext to repress indigenous and campesino communities. In one of Mexico's poorest and top drug-producing states, where struggling farmers are surrounded by the narco-economy, we ask about the cost of taking the struggle against dispossession into your own hands. english.aljazeera.net Follow us on Twitter: twitter.com Follow us on Facebook: facebook.com Follow us on Tumblr: ajfaultlines.tumblr.com See all episodes of Fault Lines www.youtube.com Meet the Fault Lines staff: www.youtube.com

Mexico's Drug War
Duration : 3554 Seconds

The Mexican Drug War is an ongoing armed conflict taking place among rival drug cartels fighting each other for regional control, and Mexican government forces seeking to combat drug trafficking. However, the government's principal goal has been to put down the drug-related violence that was raging between different rival drug cartels in Mexico before any military intervention was made.[27] In addition, the Mexican government has claimed that their primary focus is on dismantling the powerful drug cartels, rather than on drug trafficking prevention, which is left to US functionaries. Although Mexican drug cartels, or drug trafficking organizations, have existed for several decades, they have become more powerful since the demise of Colombia's Cali and Medellín cartels in the 1990s. Mexican drug cartels now dominate the wholesale illicit drug market in the United States.[31] Arrests of key cartel leaders, particularly in the Tijuana and Gulf cartels, have led to increasing drug violence as cartels fight for control of the trafficking routes into the United States. The US Department of Justice estimates that wholesale earnings from illicit drug sales range from $13.6 billion to $48.4 billion annually. Given its geographic location, Mexico has long been used as a staging and transshipment point for narcotics, illegal immigrants and contraband destined for US markets from Mexico, South America and elsewhere. During the 1980s and early 1990s, Colombia's Pablo Escobar was the ...

www.hrw.org Through in-depth research in five states, Human Rights Watch documented scores of cases of disappearances, extrajudicial killings, and torture carried out by security forces. Virtually none of these cases is being adequately investigated—not in the military or civilian justice systems. Nor is the government investigating most of the 45000-plus homicides allegedly tied to organized crime. And the impunity for these crimes has contributed to an environment of lawlessness in many parts of the country, making for a counterproductive public security strategy.

BBC This World 2010 Mexico's Drug War

Violence is running out of control in Mexico as rival drug cartels battle over the smuggling routes to America. Mexico's president has declared war on the gangsters but the only result appears to be an escalation of the killings. Katya Adler journeys deep into the heart of a shocking conflict, uncovering the human stories behind the seemingly random and disturbing violence. She asks whether the continuing freedom of the world's most powerful drug runner, Joaquin 'Chapo' Guzman, is evidence that the Government's war is toothless. What if I told you there's a business for bodyguards right now along the Mexico border. The guards are supposed to protect their clients, but they're also supposed to prevent abductions and help to negotiate kidnapping cases should any arise. And we're not just talking about Americans going down to Mexico to help, we're talking about when Mexicans want to cross the border into the US as well, the protection is needed both ways. Wired's Danger Room has highlighted a few firms who specialize in what they call "executive protection" including Clayton International, Black Stone, and Klein Investigations.

Mexico film tackles stark reality of drug war
Duration : 147 Seconds

A new Mexican film called Miss Bala has been praised for breaking new ground for its portrayal of the brutality of the country's drug war. Miss Bala has also been noted as one of the few films in Mexico to depict President Felipe Calderon's drug war as corrupt and futile. The filmmakers said it is impossible to portray the drug war without shedding light on corruption. Inspired by a true story, the film is about a beauty contestant who was forced to work for a ruthless drug cartel boss. Al Jazeera's Adam Raney reports from Mexico City. Inside Mexico's Drug War Part One
Duration : 1701 Seconds

Investigative journalist John Gibler takes us inside the drug war in Mexico, revealing the facts behind the popularized versions of the violence. In Part 1, Gibler, author of To Die in Mexico, analyzes the narcotics traffic as a $250 to 500 billion a year global business providing illegal drugs everywhere in the world. He debunks the myth that those who are killed -- as many as 50000 since Felipe Calderon took office in 2006 -- are all somehow involved in the drug trade. In the US, anti-drug policies have traditionally had racial implications, as detailed in Michelle Alexander's book, The New Jim Crow.
