Mexico Travel: Excursions near Morelia - Quiroga, Tzintzuntzan, Janitzio, Patzcuaro
Duration : 620 Seconds

My second day in Morelia entailed a full-day excursion to nearby Lake Patzcuaro. After an enjoyable country drive we made our first stop in Quiroga, a commercial country town that is well known for its carnitas, exquisitely roasted tender pork that is rolled up inside a soft tortilla delicious! Hundreds of vendors sell clothing, fruits, vegetables and all sorts of trinkets. After a stop in the historic town of Tzintzuntzan, the former capital of the Purepecha empire, we drove to the shores of Lake Patzcuaro and took a boat to the island of Janitzio, an island that is crowned by a 50 metre high statue of Jose Maria Morelos, one of Mexicos most important indepence heros. Janitizo is most well known for its exuberant celebrations of the Dia de los Muertos (Day of the Dead). After climbing up a series of steep steps flanked by shops selling handicrafts and local food, we reached the top of the island and even lined up to climb the inside of the statue. Once we had reached the top of the statue we were able to peer out over the lake from the stretched-out fist of Jose Maria Morelos. Our final stop for the day was in the historic town of Patzcuaro where we grabbed a bite to eat and took a walk through the historic downtown. We visited the Basilica de Nuestra Senora de la Salud as well as the Casa de los Once Patios (House of the Eleven Courtyards), a former nunnery that has been turned into a centre of culture and arts and crafts. We watched two local artists, a woodworker and ...

Oaxaca, Mexico
Duration : 168 Seconds

From the www.VideoSource.com Global Village Travel Guide DVD's http (limited quantities) Mexico stock footage: www.videosource.com Transcript On the southernmost Pacific coast of Mexico is the state of Oaxaca. It's the center of commerce for the 16 Indian cultures that live in the surrounding hills. Here as nowhere else history tradition and prehispanic culture all blend with the excitement of the contemporary world. Oaxacans are so proud of their capital that they've designated the entire city of Oaxaca a national historic monument. No new building is permitted within 5 kilometers of the city center. Each day the local indians gather at Oaxaca's shady central plaza to display their handicrafts. The plaza is one of the most beautiful in all of Mexico and provides an inviting spot for leisurely relaxation or perhaps for a shoe-shine and a morning cup of coffee. Its colonial charm and streetside cafes are reminiscent of the older sections of a fine European town. A few blocks from the plaza is the church of Santo Domingo - its modest exterior gives way to a gilded, highly ornamented interior. At the highest point of the ceiling hundreds of angel faces converge where God's eye can watch over them and the world. The old convent next door to the church of Santo Domingo has been converted into the Oaxacan regional museum. It houses a collection which includes finely wrought Mixtec jewelry. and unusual artifacts. These pieces are just part of the treasure that is one the largest ...

Mexico Travel: Ajijic on Lake Chapala - A Popular Retirement Destination
Duration : 448 Seconds

I am very passionate about language study travel, and I love to improve my Spanish while being immersed locally in a Spanish-speaking country. So in February of 2010 I spent 13 days in Mexico, with a home base in Guadalajara, Mexicos second largest city. I studied Spanish at the Guadalajara Language Centre and stayed with a local family in Tlaquepaque, a picturesque neighbourhood in the southern part of Guadalajara. In addition to my 2 hours of language studies every day at the Guadalajara Language Centre, I did a number of excursions: I went to downtown Guadalajara and visited the impressive baroque church and the historic core of the city. My excursions in Tlaquepaque included a guided visit with a tourist policeman who took me up onto the bell tower of one of Tlaquepaques churches. I also got to see some samples of the artwork and handicrafts that are produced in Tlaquepaque, which is renowned for its galleries and arts stores. I visited the neighbouring arts & crafts market of Tonala, a huge outdoor market with hundreds of interesting vendors. Longer excursions took me to Lake Chapala, a popular retirement destinations for Americans and Canadians trying to escape our cold winters. My local guide Jose Orozco took me to Mexcala Island, a prison island with buildings from the early 1800s, the pretty town of Chapala and the popular retirement town of Ajijic where so many gringos have settled down permanently. We also went on a tour to the magic village of Tequila which is ...

Mexico Travel: Safe or Not?
Duration : 170 Seconds

OAK BAY - The phones are ringing at Oak Bay's Athlone Travel - the first few weeks of 2011 have been busy. But bookings to Mexico are down, and clients are asking questions. "They're Concerned about the violence, if they go to Mexico are they in any danger" says Manager Liz Smith. And you can see where skittish travellers may be getting that idea. On Monday, 69-year-old Mike Di Lorenzo of Penticton was hit in the leg by gunfire meant for someone else in Mazatlan. He needed surgery and two blood transfusions, and likely saved his wife's life by diving on top of her. Earlier this month, a Montreal police officer got separated from his friends at a bar in Cancun and was severely beaten. A woman from Ontario claims was gang-raped by police in Playa del Carmen on New Year's eve. And in November, 33-year-old Nanaimo Realtor, father, and newlywed Malcolm Johnson was killed in a freak gas explosion at the Grand Riviera Hotel along with four other Canadians. Royal Roads University "Human Security" expert Kenneth Christie just returned from Mexico, where he says a drug war has taken more than 30000 lives over the past four years. But most of the violence is taking place far from your favourite all-inclusive resort. "I think tourists should be careful when they go to Mexico, stay away obviously from where the drug war is taking place, but in most of the resorts they're pretty safe" says Christie. He says the BC man injured this week was simply in the wrong place at the wrong time ...

Coyoacan, Mexico City (Mexico) - Travel Guide
Duration : 85 Seconds

The trendy and historically rich neighborhood of Mexico City. Coyoacan is a beautiful colonial neighborhood in Mexico City. It actually used to be a separate town in the past, but over time became part of Mexico City. Even today, amidst the three lined streets and colonial buildings, you can get a feel of life back in the early 20th century. One of the most recognizable symbols is Parroquia de San Bautista, which was built in the 16th century. The church has been well-preserved, and besides religious activities, you can get married here. The church is located in the plaza area of Coyoacan, which is made of Plaza d'Hidalgo and Jardin del Centenario. This is really the heart of Coyoacan during the weekends. Restaurants, bars and cafes line up the plaza, providing a good vantage point for people watching. Coyoacan is famous for its ice cream. During the weekends it has a festive feel with open air markets, musicians, and performers entertaining the locals. I am Erika Zavala, showing you Mexico City.
