The Mexican government says the country is beginning to emerge from its deepest recession in 50 years, but officials say that the pace of economic recovery will be slow. In recent months, millions of Mexicans have fallen into poverty, largely due to the continuing economic crisis. President Felipe Calderon says he is instituting policies to help the poorest in Mexican society but, as Franc Contreras reports, there are concerns that those measures will do little to bring relief to those most in need.

Gerardo Naranjo's latest feature, Miss Bala, explores the many extremes of modern Mexican society when the world of beauty pageants and the current drug war collide. Stunning Laura, the only witness to a night-club massacre by a group of narcos, realizes her goal of becoming Miss Baja California -- although the gang's hand in the coronation makes it fall short of what she had dreamed it would be. From the very first shot, the story is told through the eyes of the innocent Laura Guerrero (Stephanie Sigman). A tall, willowy girl from a poor family in Tijuana, she dreams of participating in a beauty pageant with her best friend Suzu. Their plans take a nasty turn in a gangland disco. Laura is in the bathroom when armed men slip over the wall and start firing on the dancers, leaving a bloodbath behind them. As an eyewitness, she's kidnapped by the hitmen. Her ravishing looks may be what saves her life because instead of killing her, the inscrutable drug lord Lino (Noe Hernandez) forces "the skinny girl" to become a driver and drug runner for the gang. From that moment on, the film's pace races through events in a chain of escalating violence, tension, smoke and gunfire. Heres the first bunch of post-CRHS BBQ trains that me, Marc (NS6677), Kenny D (pahogger), and Nick (nprsux) caught on a beautiful first of May, at milepost PT 148 by the dragging equipment detectors on the Pittsburgh Line, at Mexico, PA. My Mexican Shivah is about how the death of a man results in the celebration of his life. According to Jewish belief, from the moment a Jew is born, he or she is accompanied by two angels: an angel of light and an angel of darkness. With the passing Moishe (75), his family and friends gather in Mexico City to sit shivah, the 7-day Jewish mourning ritual. The spirit angels, Aleph and Bet, divine accountants, only visible to the camera, watch over the family and calculate which angel will accompany Moishe's soul to the afterlife. The odds are against Moishe from the beginning. Family dysfunction aside, Moishe's friends are all attending for their own motives. And to make matters worse, while performing his duties, a Chevreman, who is a member of the Sacred Funeral Society, is milking the family for all they're worth: charging for kosher food, slippers and various other shivah goods. Emotionally unstable and obsessed with staying young, Moishe's daughter Esther, falls apart; crying over a lost tooth and announcing that she is going to have plastic surgery to fix her entire body immediately after the shivah. Meanwhile, Moishe's son, Ricardo, is attempting to convince a doctor attending the shivah to give his girlfriend an abortion, while his wandering eye leads him to his dead father's lover, Julia Palafox, the notorious mistress for whom Moishe left his family many years earlier.
