Denise Dresser, "Mexico 2012 and Beyond"
Duration : 5432 Seconds

Mexico faces a presidential election in which the former ruling party, the PRI, may return to power. The talk will examine the reasons behind the "Putinization" of Mexico: the possibility of political regression due to the lack of substantive change over the last 12 years of National Action Party (PAN) rule. Dresser will focus on the main candidates and their campaign dynamics as well as on the implications of a PRI win in the context of the country's "war on drugs." She will also address the structural factors that have made democratic consolidation and economic reforms difficult to carry out, turning Mexico into a country that seems condemned to subpar economic performance. Denise Dresser is a professor of political science at the Instituto Tecnológico de México (ITAM), where she has taught since 1991. She writes a political column for the Mexican newspaper Reforma and the news weekly Proceso and won Mexico's National Journalism Award in 2010. She spoke for the Center for Latin American Studies at UC Berkeley on April 27, 2012.

Connecticut Mayor Joseph Maturo 'I Might Have Tacos' - "SB1070" In Action
Duration : 258 Seconds

President Franklin Delano Roosevelt: "Remember always that all of us, and you and I especially, are descended from immigrants and revolutionists!" We have decided to post this because of how closely it is related to our corpus of ideals... The idiocy (lack of knowledge) of this man... pushing national and racial division... it speaks for itself; however, it is blown out of proportion, twisted by the media because? bias news sells... controversial news sells... A relevant movie to watch? Ace In The Hole by Billy Wilder. We here at NoNationalityNeeded believe that human beings should not be taught to divide themselves. Labels like Latino, Italian, French, German, Chinese, Asian, European, Black, White and so on, divide people, if not consciously, subconsciously.... Humans are the same no matter how they look on the outside, how they act, and/or what they believe in; we are all flesh and bone. Through acculturation/socialization children are taught a set of norms and values (the creation of a pseudo individual), develop a world view, and see/label that world accordingly, but in these labels a very natural thing happens, the separation of these labels into categories: "Us" and "Them", the familiar and the unfamiliar, the similar and the different and so on (the basic formation of social groups (in-groups/out-groups) - race, nationality, and so on). Through education, people can be made to see past these diversionary and separatist thought patterns that consciously and/or ...

What's Wrong with Mexico? Drugs, Dinosaurs and Dithering
Duration : 4934 Seconds

Denise Dresser will evaluate the limitations of the Calderon governments war on drugs and how the current climate of insecurity explains the renewed electoral strength and political renaissance of the Institutional Revolutionary Party (PRI). Denise Dresser is a professor of Political Science at the Instituto Tecnológico Autónomo de México (ITAM) where she has taught comparative politics, political economy and Mexican politics since 1991. She writes a political column for the Mexican newspaper Reforma and the news weekly Proceso and was the host of the political talk shows Entreversiones and El País de Uno on Mexican television. clas.berkeley.edu
