Mexican Polyglot Speaks 11 Languages
Duration : 437 Seconds

Mexican polyglot speaks English, Spanish, Polish, French, Catalan, Romanian, Portuguese, German, Dutch, Latin & Italian. I hope this video inspires others to study languages and learn about other cultures. Thanks for watching! Here is the amount of time I had been speaking each language at the time I made the video; English-21 yrs, Polish-2 yrs, French-10 yrs, Catalan-3 yrs, Romanian-4 yrs, Portuguese-3 yrs, German-4 yrs, Dutch-2 months, Latin-4 months, Italian-11 yrs. Spanish is my native language and I learned English as a child when I moved to the United States. I remained bilingual until high school where I learned Italian and French. Then in college I took classes to learn Polish, German, Portuguese & Catalan. I only took one course for each language and afterwards I continued studying on my own with the help of friends that were native speakers of each language. During college I also taught myself Romanian by listening to music. I translated song lyrics and I started forming my own original sentences based on the structures I heard in the songs. Later on I also used a grammar book to learn full conjugations of all the different verbs. I studied Romanian for a year before I finally had a chance to practice it with native Romanian speakers. Besides Romanian, only Latin & Dutch have also been entirely self-taught with the help of music and literature. *I recently arrived Mexico where I am currently studying Nahuatl. *Very soon I would also like to learn Russian ...

Carlos Fuentes
Duration : 303 Seconds

Author, statesman and scholar Carlos Fuentes has defined the cultural, emotional and hereditary identity of an entire continent. He is recognized worldwide as one of the greatest literary and political figures of the Spanish-speaking world. Fuentes novels, including The New York Times bestseller, The Old Gringo, and the classics Terra Nostra and The Death of Artemio Cruz, look deeply into the identity of Latin America, its internal conflicts and its contentious relationship with the superpower to the north. His nonfiction work and essays also celebrate the rich contributions of Latin culture (including The Buried Mirror, which became a Discovery Channel series). His latest book, The Eagles Throne, is the most wickedly entertaining novel of Fuentes career, said The New York Times. He has won Mexicos National Prize in Literature, the Miguel de Cervantes Prize (the highest honor for a Spanish-language writer), Frances Legion of Honor and the Four Freedoms Award. He was the first recipient of the Latin Civilization Award presented by the Presidents of Brazil, Mexico and France. He has also served as Director of International Cultural Relations for Mexicos Ministry of Exterior Relations and the Mexican Ambassador to France. He has just completed his first play, and his new collection of short stories, Every Happy Family, was published in spring 2008.

Mexican author Carlos Fuentes dies at 83
Duration : 116 Seconds

Mexico City, Mexico (NTN24) Mexican author and novelist Carlos Fuentes dies in Mexico City at the age of 83. Mexican author Carlos Fuentes has died at the age of 83, President Felipe Calderon said on Tuesday (May 15) via his Twitter account. A former diplomat, Fuentes was known for works including The Death of Artemio Cruz and The Old Gringo, which was the first US best-seller written by a Mexican national, and later was turned into a 1989 film starring Gregory Peck and Jane Fonda. "I profoundly lament the passing of our beloved and admired Carlos Fuentes, writer and universally-known Mexican. Rest in Peace," President Calderon wrote on his Twitter account. Fuente's passing was also mentioned on the Twitter account of Mexico City Mayor Marcelo Ebrard. Just this March, Fuentes attended a news conference announcing the Formentor Prize for Literature 2012 in Mexico City. "To give a prize with total freedom, they couldn't have done it better. The first prize was given as together with Jorge Luis Borge and Samuel Beckett. The Formentor prize keeps alive a magnificent tradition in appreciating the entire work of a writer. It's not about giving a prize to a book," he said at the time.
