3 March 2009 Rodrigues, (Rodriguan Creole: Zil Rodrigues) named after the Portuguese explorer Diogo Rodrigues, is the smallest of the Mascarene Islands and a dependency of Mauritius. With a peak elevation of approximately 355 meters, it is located 560 km east of Mauritius island, in the middle of the Indian Ocean. It is 109 km² in size, and surrounded by a coral reef. The capital of the island is Port Mathurin. As of 2006, the island's population was about 40000. The main language is Rodriguan Creole, while French and English are spoken or understood by some of the inhabitants. The main religion is Roman Catholicism with a small minorities of other religions. Most of the inhabitants are of mixed African and French descent. The main industries are handicraft, farming, fishing and tourism. From the 10th century, Arabs have been known to visit the Mascarene Islands. A 12th century map by the Arab geographer Ash-Sharif al-Idrisi, clearly shows the three islands of the Mascarenes as Dina Arobi (Mauritius), Dina Margabin (Réunion) and Dina Moraze (Rodrigues). The island was named after the Portuguese navigator Dom Diogo Rodrigues in 1528. From 1601, the Dutch began visiting the island, for fresh supplies of food. In 1691 the Huguenot, François Leguat and 7 companions landed on the island, intending to set up a farming colony of Protestant refugees. 4 years ago the European Union cut the price of sugar by 36% making it unprofitable to carry on farming sugar in Maurituis. But the country didnt simple shut up its sugar industry. Sugar is still exported, but with the EU slashing prices, value had to be added and some serious consolidation and re-distribution of skills had to take place.

A new study says investments in sub-Saharan Africa increased by more than twenty percent between two thousand one and two thousand eight. But the study also found that just a few countries were responsible for most of that growth. Nigeria was responsible for one-third of it. Ghana, Tanzania, Sudan and Uganda also increased their spending. But thirteen countries decreased their investments. Nienke Beintema from the Washington-based International Food Policy Research Institute led the study. She says new technologies are needed to fight hunger. She says some countries, including Nigeria, have increased their investments after spending far too little in the past. She says: "It is a positive sign because it is more commitment from the government. But Nigeria had extremely low levels of agricultural research funding." She was there for the first time in two thousand or two thousand one. She visited institutes "that could not function," she says. They did not even have a phone line or fuel for their cars or a working computer. Nigeria now has the largest agricultural research system south of the Sahara. This was one of the youth presentations at the Sixth Region Diaspora Caucus (SRDC) in September, 2009 in Seattle, Washington. Its focus is on Agricultural Science and its importance in the liberation and sustaining of Africa and the Diaspora. The presenter is Ashlie West who has a graduate degree in NGO's and is well into attaining a second degree in Agricultural Science. Key points are to inspire African youth to focus on the sciences as a sure way of achieving the goals the African Union has envisioned. Also, other countries and peoples are quickly buying and leasing vast tracks of Africa's land for growing cash crops for other countries such as Saudi Arabia, Japan, European nations and others. We as African Diaspora peoples are not in the game, by comparison. Black farmers in America have spent many years fighting a US government while increasingly losing millions of acres of farmland. Why not turn that expertise and energy into productive enterprise on the continent of Africa?
