| | Mauritius to Rodrigues Island Duration : 202 Seconds 3 March 2009 Rodrigues, (Rodriguan Creole: Zil Rodrigues) named after the Portuguese explorer Diogo Rodrigues, is the smallest of the Mascarene Islands and a dependency of Mauritius. With a peak elevation of approximately 355 meters, it is located 560 km east of Mauritius island, in the middle of the Indian Ocean. It is 109 km² in size, and surrounded by a coral reef. The capital of the island is Port Mathurin. As of 2006, the island's population was about 40000. The main language is Rodriguan Creole, while French and English are spoken or understood by some of the inhabitants. The main religion is Roman Catholicism with a small minorities of other religions. Most of the inhabitants are of mixed African and French descent. The main industries are handicraft, farming, fishing and tourism. From the 10th century, Arabs have been known to visit the Mascarene Islands. A 12th century map by the Arab geographer Ash-Sharif al-Idrisi, clearly shows the three islands of the Mascarenes as Dina Arobi (Mauritius), Dina Margabin (Réunion) and Dina Moraze (Rodrigues). The island was named after the Portuguese navigator Dom Diogo Rodrigues in 1528. From 1601, the Dutch began visiting the island, for fresh supplies of food. In 1691 the Huguenot, François Leguat and 7 companions landed on the island, intending to set up a farming colony of Protestant refugees. Farming was not successful, but there was an abundance of tortoises, turtles, birds, fish and other seafood. During the 18th ... Tags :Mauritius, Rodrigues, Island, Air, MRU, RRG
| | Walking with Lions, Mauritius Duration : 75 Seconds Video taken at Casela Bird Park in Mauritius. This was an amazing experience - cats are my favourite animals and I have been to plenty of zoos and seen plenty of lions. But it completely overwhelmed me when I saw both of these lions walking towards us - no barrier! What I really liked about this experience was the way that the lions obviously love their walks. The park arranges several walks a day, they limit group sizes to small numbers which is another thing that I liked...don't want the poor animals swamped! They take 2 lions out at a time with 2 keepers. Our 2 lions were an 18 month old girl and boy called Amber and Mafuta. I think their enclosure has about 8-10 lions in it - a decent sized enclosure. The lions clearly know when it's time for walkies as they were right up at the door trying to be the ones chosen to come out! During the walk, one of the keepers gave them chicken to keep them happy plus to encourage them onto trees so we could take photos with them. We were able to stroke them (I wouldn't say they are particularly soft, the fur is more wiry really). I don't know why more zoos in the world don't consider doing something like this. Having been to so many zoos, I do tend to feel sorry for caged animals as they look so bored. Why can't zoos encourage the taming of wild animals so that they can enjoy encounter with people. They're in captivity and reliant on people anyway, I don't see why zoo's discourage taming. It breaks up their day a bit and allows them ... Tags :Walking, Lion

| | Before It's Too Late - Before It's Too Late - From the Brink of Eternity Duration : 3158 Seconds FROM THE BRINK OF ETERNITY looks at what indigenous people of Kenya, the Seychelles and Mauritius are doing to save their endangered species. In Kenya the film looks at how the growing elephant population is threatening the future of the Amboseli National Park. Once hunted to near extinction the elephants are now so numerous they have almost destroyed the park, by uprooting thousands of acacia trees, thus endangering every animal in the park. We speak with the Kenyan Wildlife Service about a plan to plant one million trees. In the Seychelles we see the world's most erotic plant the Coco De Mar. During the last three hundred years it's erotic and mysterious nuts were washed up on shores around the world. When explorers found their source the nuts were harvested, and thousands of the trees where destroyed to keep the nut's value. We also see one of the word's rarest birds the Magpie Robin (just 30 birds left) as well as other endangered birds and animals. We speak with the Seychellous about their efforts to turn the tide of extinction. In Mauritius we see the world's rarest bird, the Echo Parakeet (just 17 birds left), as well as the world's rarest tree, there is only one left. We have all heard the expression " as dead as a Dodo". The Dodo comes from Mauritius and is the symbol of extinction. We see what the Mauritius people are doing to save their very special species. In particular we hear of one amazing success story. The Mauritius Kestrel was down to just 4 individual ... | | The Dodo Duration : 131 Seconds A bit about the dodo, from the island of Mauritius. A strong symbol of what we can accomplish if we put our minds to it. I've a bit of a soft spot for the animal kingdom, as any of you who know me will already be aware of. I never met a dodo, but come on, look how awesome its face is. On a side note, animals are becoming extinct 100 times faster than previously thought, which is many thousands of times more than they would have if we weren't involved. Save those frogs! Music by me again, commentary by David Attenborough. directorzone.cyberlink.com Tags :Dodo, David, Attenborough, Extinct, Mauritius, Island
