FRANCE JEMON performs at the Blacktown Workers' Club, Sydney, Australia with the popular "SEGA DOWN UNDER" dance group for FIESTA TROPICAL produced by Marceau Camille. Well known in Mauritius for his sega hits "Pionière", "Picolo" and "Mamzel Amélie" in the 50's and 60's France today continues to sing and promote mauritian music away from his native land. Like all the other famous sega singers of the time, including Sir Serge Lebrasse, Roger Augustin, Jaques Cantin, Maria Sega and Francis Salomon, France was influenced by TIFRERE's pulsating rhythm from Africa. And while hanging on to the King's groove. he transformed his songs by incorporating modern instruments together with humorous lyrics. In 1994, France became the first mauritian artist to release a Sega Cd in Australia, "SEGA DOWN UNDA" - A revival of all his songs. Again, just like innovational Kaya and Menwar, he has used new ingredients incorporating for the first time ever, instruments such as., Pedal Steel Guitar, Mandolin, Dobro and Heavy Rock Guitar sounds giving yet another brand new flavour to sega music. Since his Cd release, France has performed numerously at mauritian functions, cultural events, the Sydney Festivals, and most major Australian clubs with Fiesta Tropical. He was chosen as the supporting Act for "La Compagnie Creole" during their last tour at the Sydney Olympics.

This video is showing the Durga Puja and the procession to the immersion in the sea. This is another festival being celebrated in La Gaulette, Mauritius. La Gaulette is a small village; everyone turns out for the festivals even the non-Hindus. The Hindu people here show genuine acceptance of strangers at their religious festivals. The worship always depicts Durga with her four children, and occasionally two attendant deities and some banana-tree figures. In the olden days, all five idols would be depicted in a single frame, traditionally called pata. Since the 1980s however, the trend is to depict each idol separately. At the end of six days, the idol is taken for immersion in a procession amid loud chants of 'Bolo Durga mai-ki jai' (glory be to Mother Durga') and 'aashchhe bochhor abar hobe' ('it will happen again next year') and drumbeats to the river or other water body. It is cast in the waters symbolic of the departure of the deity to her home with her husband in the Himalayas. After this, in a tradition called Vijaya Dashami, families visit each other and sweetmeats are offered to visitors (Dashami is literally "tenth day" and Vijay is "victory"). Durga Puja commemorates the annual visit of the Goddess with Her children to Her parents' home, leaving finally on the Dashami to be re-united with Shiva. Most of us would remember the 50's & 60's when Sega Singer Songwriters such as Sir Serge Lebrasse, Francis Salomon, Roger Augustin and France Jemon were constantly being heard on mauritian radio. They entertained audiences young and old at parties, clubs, hotels, and many outdoor concerts. Influenced by the Godfather, TIFRERE and while adopting his distinctive african rhythm. they changed the sega music scene by incorporating modern instruments to their songs including humorous lyrics. FRANCE JEMON songwriter since 1949 continues to do that. His first hits, "Pionière" and "Anita" were cut on vinyl in 1957, then his biggest hit, Mamzelle Amélie" on 45 rpm His early exciting career as a traditional sega singer in Mauritius has seen him perform on numerous platforms with great musicians of the time namely, Karl Brasse, Marclaine, Lulu Pouzet and Philippe Ohsan. France became the first mauritian artist to record a Sega Cd in Australia,"SEGA DOWN UNDA". Diwali in Mauritius Diwali is celebrated with great enthusiasm at Mauritius as this country have great Indian crowd. The Diwali celebrations at Mauritius is as good as in India. The festival of lights- Diwali is celebrated in October/November. Diwali marks the victory of Rama over Ravana and also commemorates Krishna's destruction of the demon Narakasuran. Earthen oil lamps are placed in front of every home turning the island into a fairyland of flickering lights. Mauritius is a beautiful landmass full of picturesque landscapes and enchanting spots. Mauritius accounts a 63% of Indian majority of which 80% follow Hinduism. Hence, celebration of almost all the Hindu festivals in this island is a common phenomenon. In Mauritius, Diwali celebration is an age-old tradition. Beautiful rows of twinkling candles and lamps of all sorts are lit all over the island to celebrate the return of the hero of the Ramayana, Rama, from his 14 years of exile. Besides celebrating the victory of good over evil and light over darkness, the little flickering lights also symbolize the beginning of summer. The main day of the festivities is seen as a particularly auspicious day for merchants to make up their accounts and balances for the previous year, to go unburdened into the next. After the morning prayers, Hindus share sweets prepared specially for the occasion with family members, neighbors and friends of any faith, in accordance with the multicultural spirit of Mauritius.

In 1897, Gopalrao Gund proposed holding in Urus as in expression of his gratitude to Baba for having been granted the birth of a son after many childless years. Baba gave his permission for the celebration and fixed the day for Ramnavami. This was an ingenious touch of Baba's. Urus is a Muslim festival honoring a Muslim Saint( usually one who passed away); by holding the Urus, on the day of a Hindu festival, the two communities were brought closer tighter in a natural yet remarkable way. Things were going on in this way and the fair was gradually increasing in importance till 1912. When a change took place. That year one devotee Mr. Krishnarao Jogeshwar Bhishm came to the fair, he was staying in Dixit Wada. A new thought arose in his mind and he costed a letter thus. There is some provindential arrangement in the fact that the Urus or fair is celebrated in Shirdi on the Ram Navami day. The Ram Navami day is very dear to all the Hindus then why not begin the Ram Navami festival the celebration of the birth of Shri Ram on this day here. Kaka Mahajani liked the idea and it was arranged to get Baba's permission in this matter. Bhishm solved the difficulty of Kritan by saying that his Ram Akhyan, the composition on Rama's birth was ready and he would do the Kritan himself while Kaka Mahajani should play on the harmonium.
