The Banc d'Arguin National Park (French: Parc National du Banc d'Arguin) lies on the west coast of Mauritania between Nouakchott and Nouadhibou. The World Heritage Site is a major breeding site for migratory birds. A wide range of species include flamingos, broad-billed sandpipers, pelicans and terns. Much of the breeding is on sand banks including the islands of Tidra, Niroumi, Nair, Kijji and Arguim. The surrounding waters are some of the richest fishing waters in western Africa and serve as nesting grounds for the entire western region. The Banc d'Arguin National Park is a Nature reserve that was established to protect both the natural resources and the valuable fisheries, which makes a significant contribution to the national economy (Hoffmann, 1988), as well as scientifically and aesthetically valuable geological sites, in the interests of and for the recreation of the general public. The park's vast expanses of mudflats provide a home for over two million migrant shorebirds from northern Europe, Siberia and Greenland. The region's mild climate and absence of human disturbance makes the park one of the most important sites in the world for these species. The nesting bird population is also noted for its great numbers and diversity. France 24, March 17, 2012 | Mauritania's state information agency said in a statement that Abdullah al-Senoussi was arrested at the airport in the capital Nouakchott upon arrival from the Moroccan city of Casablanca. It said he was carrying a fake Malian passport. As Gadhafi's regime crumbled in the second half of 2011, many of the dictator's inner circle reportedly fled from advancing rebels toward the Sahara, where the regime had long cultivated ties with desert groups both in Libya and in neighboring countries. Al-Senoussi, also Gadhafi's brother-in-law, was also one of six Libyans convicted in absentia and sentenced to life in prison in France for the 1989 bombing of a French passenger (DC 10 UTA) over Niger that killed all 170 people on board. The French government has previously asked that he shall handed over to France. In August 2011, after the liberation of Tripoli by the Nefusa Mountains fighters associated with the Misurata brigades, Al-Senoussi had fled to the south of Libya, and thereafter to Niger and North Mali Azawad, under protection of some Tuareg gangsters, former mercenary fighters in various Gaddafi's brigades. He was arrested in Mauritania, at the Nouakchott airport, after months of stalking by the French foreign intelligence services. Al-Senoussi is responsible for the bombing of the UTA DC 10 jet in which 170 persons died, including 54 French citizens, a terrorist act for which Al-Senoussi was sentenced to life imprisonment (in abstentia) by the ...

Leaders from Europe, Africa and the Middle East will meet in Paris this weekend to launch the Mediterranean Union. The new body aims to strengthen ties between Europe and its southern neighbours. Many of those migrating to North Africa and Europe come from West and Central Africa. Their pursuit of a better life takes them on a dangerous journey north across the Sahara Desert and the Mediterranean Sea. They leave their home countries and travel to transit countries such as Mauritania, Mali and Niger. There, they begin their journey across desert borders to North Africa and then on to Europe. Al Jazeera's Casey Kauffman traveled to the northeast of Mali and met up with a group of migrants on the first leg of their journey across the Sahara.
