Mauritania has become one of Africa's latest oil producers thanks to the discovery of the Chinguetti oil field, 50 miles off the coast of Nouakchott. This new resource shakes up a country with a weak civil society, unstable democratic institutions, a lack of skilled personnel and rampant corruption. But worse than the usual curse it brings in terms of political instabilities and numerous coups, this time oil could also be a terrible economic predator. Oil production has started with an installation that poses a threat to the environment and could endanger the future of thousands of African and European fishermen from Senegal to Spain, Japan and even Russia. Australian oil producer Woodside has converted an old super-tanker, the Berge-Hélène in Singapore into an FPSO platform. The single-hull Berge Hélène not only doesn't respect the international standard of double-hull FPSOs, but it already suffers from microfissures due to its old age. Any accident or collision resulting in an oil spill could endanger the entire coast including the Banc d'Arguin national park, a world heritage site and unique marine reserve the size of the Nile Delta, crucial for fish spawning and bird migrations, worth hundreds of millions of Euros in future fish stocks. Massive Protest Attracts Tens of Thousands - and Takes Everyone By Surprise Monday, 12 March 2012: Mauritania's capital city Nouakchott saw the largest opposition protest in the country's recent history. Despite government attempts to limit participation in the protest by distributing free food in poor neighborhoods, 40000-60000 Mauritanians took to the streets to demand General Aziz's departure from power. Mauritania has witnessed a steady stream of protests since 25 February 2012, but conditions in the country seemed to be stacked against both the political opposition and civil society activist groups. Then, on 3 March 2012, the "February 25 Movement" - an independent activist group with no political affiliation - organised a seminar for an invited audience of academics, elites and group leaders, to expose the true political situation in the country, which has evolved over the past year. An expert on constitutional law explained that the current administration is both illegal and illegitimate. The parliament was pushing through constitutional reforms which extend its mandate after the government's failure to organize elections to renew it in October 2011 as mandated by the constitution. A protest against the reforms was held on March 6th. Several arrests were made as police attacked the protesters with tear gas. Although some stateless people are refugees, many have never crossed a border or left their country of birth. Although the problems related to statelessness may manifest themselves differently, at the root is a group of people who have been denied a legal identity. A stateless person is not recognized as a citizen by any state. Citizenship enables you not only to vote, hold public office, and exit and enter a country freely, but also to obtain housing, health care, employment, and education. Citizenship is necessary in order to live a decent human life. Stateless people are denied that right.
