Food Insecurity in Mauritania and the Sahel: Interview with Nathalie Bonvin
Duration : 270 Seconds

Without action now, over one million Mauritanians will face a severe food crisis in the coming months, warns the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC). The combined effects of poor harvests and lower pastures resulting from erratic rainfall, drought, as well as rising food prices have severely reduced the availability of food for tens of thousands of Mauritanians, in particular the poorest households. The Inter-Agency Standing Committee's 2012 strategic paper shows that the number of people facing food shortages has increased from 428000 to 838000 between July and November and that this number could reach 1.2 million people by January 2012, if urgent action is not taken. The IFRC appeal aims to support the Mauritanian Red Crescent in assisting 10000 households. Funds raised will be used to distribute fodder for livestock, seeds and tools for agro-pastoralists, relief food for vulnerable households, and reinforce existing nutrition centres with mobile units. Community-based disaster risk reduction activities will also be implemented to allow people to be less dependent on rainwater for their food security.

West Africa Food Crisis: Baaba Maal visits drought-stricken Mauritania

Across the Sahel, some 13 million people risk being victims of a serious food crisis if rapid action is not taken. Senegalese singer Baaba Maal has visited Mauritanian communities at the center of the current food crisis in the Sahel, to call attention to the humanitarian need there. Low rainfall, poor harvests, a lack of pasture and rising food prices are among the key factors driving this crisis, which now affects one in four people across the country. Today 700000 people are food insecure in Mauritania. More on Oxfam's response to West Africa food crisis www.oxfam.org

West Africa Food Crisis 2012
Duration : 153 Seconds

In west Africa, millions of people face severe food shortages. People are already suffering, but the crisis will get much worse. Urgent humanitarian action is needed to help people in Niger, Chad, Mali, Mauritania, Burkina Faso and Senegal. Many communities in the Sahel region of west Africa are dependent on rain-fed agriculture or pasture for their livestock. However, erratic rainfall, droughts and insect infestations have led to poor harvests and difficult conditions for livestock. Malnutrition rates are rising and the hunger season -- which usually starts around May -- has come early. Some communities began facing shortages soon after 2011's harvest, and there are still months to go before the next harvest in August. The British Red Cross appeal will help support people in the region now, and reduce their future vulnerability. When the crisis worsens it will put lives and livelihoods at risk. Help us stop the situation deteriorating for millions of people. For more information, visit bit.ly Donate by phone on 08450 532 003
