| | Moorish epic T'heydinn Duration : 614 Seconds UNESCO: List of Intangible Cultural Heritage in Need of Urgent Safeguarding - 2011 URL: www.unesco.org Description: The T'heydinn epic encompasses dozens of poems in the Hassaniya language lauding the glorious feats of Moorish emirs and sultans and preserving the collective memory of society. Sung by griots and accompanied by traditional stringed instruments such as the lute, harp and kettledrum, the poems are passed down from father to son, with young griots first learning the instrumental skills before being initiated into the poetic tradition. Performances are occasions for regional tribal and family reunions, strengthening social ties and promoting social peace and mutual assistance. Entry from: Nouadhibou, Mauritania Entry Title: "Nouadhibou & Cap Blanc, Mauritania, Oct 15, 2007" Entry: "Mauritania to me has long been a myst**ious and intriguing country that fits neatly neith** into Medit**ranean-facing Arabic North Africa nor Sub-Saharan Black Africa. The country is an Islamic republic whose t**ritory is located almost entirely in the Sahara Des**t, making its environment ov**all p**haps the most inhospitable of all the God-forsaken lands current national boundaries have created on the African continent. The majority of Mauritania's people are "white" Maures (or Moors), descendents of B**b** tribes who adopted Arab culture and speak a dialect of Arabic called Hassaniya. The population also includes Haratins, Blacks of the same language and culture who used to be the Maures' slaves and a minority of Black Africans near the south**n bord** from tribes like Wolof and Fulani who also live in adjacent areas of Senegal and Mali. The country's total population is only around three million in an area nearly twice the size of Texas, and with most of those people living in the capital city or in a narrow wett** stretch along the south**n bord**, Mauritania is ov**all one of the emptiest countries in the world. Mauritania must also be one of the least visited countries, one that ... | | Mauritanian Traditional Singing from film 'Waiting for Happiness' 2002 - Abderrahmane Sissako Duration : 151 Seconds Voices from The Old World...Director Abderrahmane Sissako uses his film 'Waiting for Happiness' ['Heremakono'] to showcase traditional life and music of Mauritania. The film is a set of long slow tableaus of journeys, static life and textures of a small seaside town in Mauritania seen through the eyes of Abdallah, a boy who intends to emigrate to Paris. The film is his struggle to face up to his culture and the inertia and tradition of his hometown, his refusal to wear traditional clothes, inability to speak the local dialect or understand how the people can live in such an ancient and peaceable way... The musical scene is an example of an older lady singing teacher and her young protegé in a music lesson. The lesson is an example of music passed down in the ORAL TRADITION [no written form of music, just modelled and reproduced vocally with some spoken advice]. The vocal quality here is really quite astonishing. The TIMBRE [musical colour identifying particular instruments] has such nasal, throat and chest RESONANCE [vibrated parts of the body that give the voice certain TIMBRES]. The singing is really something from another ancient time and leaves the listener in rapture. It is so rare in the modern world to hear voices that have such direct 'rawness' and expression. The lady plays a traditional HARP [instrument with strings stretched over a frame with a resonator box] called an ARDIN. It is common for female performers to play the ARDIN. The ARDIN provides SCALIC [set ...
