Chinguetti la bibliothèque du désert Chinguetti (Arabic: شنقيط) is a ksour or ancient trading centre in northern Mauritania, lying on the Adrar Plateau east of Atar. Founded in the 13th century, as the center of several trans-Saharan trade routes, this small threatened city continues to attract visitors who admire its spare architecture, exotic scenery and its ancient libraries. The indigenous Saharan architecture of older sectors of the city feature reddish dry stone and mud-brick houses,featuring flat roofs timbered from palms. Many of the older houses feature hand-hewn doors cut from massive ancient acacia tress that have long disappeared from the surroundings. Many homes include courtyards or patios that crowd along narrow streets leading to the central mosque. Notable buildings in the town include The Friday Mosque of Chinguetti,an ancient structure of dry stone featuring a square minaret capped with five ostrich egg finials; the former French Foreign Legion fortress; and a tall watertower. The old quarter of the Chinguetti is home to five important manuscript libraries of scientific and Qur'anic texts, with many dating from the later Middle Ages. The Chinguetti region has been occupied for thousands of years and once was a broad savannah. Cave paintings in the nearby Amoghar Pass feature pictures of giraffes, cows and people in a green landscape quite different from the starkly beautiful sand dunes of the desert landscape found in the region today. Massive Protest Attracts Tens of Thousands - and Takes Everyone By Surprise Monday, 12 March 2012: Mauritania's capital city Nouakchott saw the largest opposition protest in the country's recent history. Despite government attempts to limit participation in the protest by distributing free food in poor neighborhoods, 40000-60000 Mauritanians took to the streets to demand General Aziz's departure from power. Mauritania has witnessed a steady stream of protests since 25 February 2012, but conditions in the country seemed to be stacked against both the political opposition and civil society activist groups. Then, on 3 March 2012, the "February 25 Movement" - an independent activist group with no political affiliation - organised a seminar for an invited audience of academics, elites and group leaders, to expose the true political situation in the country, which has evolved over the past year. An expert on constitutional law explained that the current administration is both illegal and illegitimate. The parliament was pushing through constitutional reforms which extend its mandate after the government's failure to organize elections to renew it in October 2011 as mandated by the constitution. A protest against the reforms was held on March 6th. Several arrests were made as police attacked the protesters with tear gas. According to CNN's twitter, Mauritania was the last country in the world to abolish slavery in 2007. However, if you think about it, isn't having a currency system a way of enforcing slavery. You know, subjecting those to work for less than what they could potentially have, like health insurance. Is it just me, or are we repeating the 3/5ths law, but with currency?

Voices from The Old World...Director Abderrahmane Sissako uses his film 'Waiting for Happiness' ['Heremakono'] to showcase traditional life and music of Mauritania. The film is a set of long slow tableaus of journeys, static life and textures of a small seaside town in Mauritania seen through the eyes of Abdallah, a boy who intends to emigrate to Paris. The film is his struggle to face up to his culture and the inertia and tradition of his hometown, his refusal to wear traditional clothes, inability to speak the local dialect or understand how the people can live in such an ancient and peaceable way... The musical scene is an example of an older lady singing teacher and her young protegé in a music lesson. The lesson is an example of music passed down in the ORAL TRADITION [no written form of music, just modelled and reproduced vocally with some spoken advice]. The vocal quality here is really quite astonishing. The TIMBRE [musical colour identifying particular instruments] has such nasal, throat and chest RESONANCE [vibrated parts of the body that give the voice certain TIMBRES]. The singing is really something from another ancient time and leaves the listener in rapture. It is so rare in the modern world to hear voices that have such direct 'rawness' and expression. The lady plays a traditional HARP [instrument with strings stretched over a frame with a resonator box] called an ARDIN. It is common for female performers to play the ARDIN.
