This is a Maltese-language music CD that may be summed up as a showcase of carefully selected classic poetry, beautifully sung and professionally performed; a must have for all serious lovers of Maltese music, literature and culture. This CD was produced by a dedicated team of professionals, including members of the Galea family and Etnika co-founder, Steve Borg. The first track in this album -- aptly enough -- is the oldest recorded poem in our native tongue, Pietru Caxaru's "Cantilena". This poem was found in Caxaru's notarial register by two eminent researchers in the sixties; namely Patri Mikiel Fsadni and Professor Godfrey Wettinger. It was written in the latin alphabet and provides a glimpse of an archaic 15th century vernacular which sounds more Arabic than Maltese to the modern day listener. The rest of the poems included in this compilation were written by some of the Maltese Islands' more famous literary sons and daughters. In his appreciation on the Romantic Movement in Maltese poetry, provided in the booklet accompanying this CD, Joseph P Borg touches on the technical aspects of the verse, making references to the poets, photos of whom are provided here by courtesy of the producers. Malta is favoured by this celebrity national poet Dun Karm Psaila, God's gift to the Maltese poetry and Christianity. His other masterpiece is this one « ′Tina l-Hlewwa »(eng.: "Give us the Sweetness or Lovability"), to the Sacred Heart of Jesus, which in Malta's Churches became the Hymn to the Lord's Heart, resonanced throughout the Maltese Islands since, not only every year on the Solemnity of this Great Devotion, not only every First Friday of the month but also all year round during special Holy Masses and as a Holy Communion Hymn. This way, Maltese reverence the most Sacred Heart of Jesus present in the Holy Eucharist and in our lives.
