GĦANAFEST -- 'Malta Mediterranean Folk Music Festival' presents a showcase of Mediterranean music heritage. The variety and relationship of different traditions performing on the same stage highlights the fact that local expression is truly part of a larger music arena within the Mediterranean basin. The festival also offers the opportunity to get a closer look at the instruments performed during the concerts during short presentations delivered by the musicians themselves. Tribali dominated the Malta Music Awards 2009 carrying off the Awards for Best Band, Best Album (Elephants of Lanca), Best CD Cover and Best Artist Image. In this event they played live "Festa" from the awarded CD Album. This is a short video clip taken during their performance - I do aplogize for its distorted audio.

Folk music by the Maltese Maestro Charles Camilleri. First selection is The Wooden Flute and second selection is arrangement of old folk Maltese music. Malta is a tiny nation with two major inhabited islands. But, it has a concentration of history and beauty. In this video we're showing you scenery, churches, the sea and historic buildings spread around the islands. Mro Camilleri started composing music at a tender age, at 11 he wrote a band march, his first works were already being performed in London and the US by the time he was 23. In 1972, the prestigious recording company DECCA recorded his Missa Mundi, a five-movement piece for the pipe organ which his publisher nicknamed "the organ's Rite of Spring. This comparison with Igor Stravinsky's "The Rite of Spring" was elicited with the groundbreaking techniques used by Mro Camilleri in his work for the pipe organ, that were as innovative to the instrument as Stravinsky's 1913 ballet for the genre. Among his, oeuvres which exceed 300 pieces, one cannot but mention the Malta Suite (1946) and The Maltese Cross (1995). Half of his works are recorded in over 35 CDs and sold world wide with works used as examination pieces, as was his laconic Cantilena. About 4 years ago, Joe Brincat, Roderick Busuttil, his wife Caroline and Noel Ciantar set up the website www.kappellimaltin.com with the aim of generating interest in the chapels and small churches that we have scattered around the Maltese Islands. Later, Anthony M. Brincat joined the group. It was a labour of love and they reached many people who might not have been aware of the beauty and fascination of these chapels. Eventually, in October 2011, this same group, joined by others, established the organisation "Hbieb il-Kappelli Maltin" (Friends of the Maltese Chapels) We invite you to join this organisation whose aim is to spread the knowledge about these precious gems and also to urge the authorities to make sure they are looked after and, where necessary, to be restored so future generations can enjoy them the same way we do today.
