Whether or not the anecdote about copying the novel word for word was true in its particulars, a glance at the script immediately reveals Huston's faithfulness to the source material. This is a Maltese-language music CD that may be summed up as a showcase of carefully selected classic poetry, beautifully sung and professionally performed; a must have for all serious lovers of Maltese music, literature and culture. This CD was produced by a dedicated team of professionals, including members of the Galea family and Etnika co-founder, Steve Borg. The first track in this album -- aptly enough -- is the oldest recorded poem in our native tongue, Pietru Caxaru's "Cantilena". This poem was found in Caxaru's notarial register by two eminent researchers in the sixties; namely Patri Mikiel Fsadni and Professor Godfrey Wettinger. It was written in the latin alphabet and provides a glimpse of an archaic 15th century vernacular which sounds more Arabic than Maltese to the modern day listener. The rest of the poems included in this compilation were written by some of the Maltese Islands' more famous literary sons and daughters. In his appreciation on the Romantic Movement in Maltese poetry, provided in the booklet accompanying this CD, Joseph P Borg touches on the technical aspects of the verse, making references to the poets, photos of whom are provided here by courtesy of the producers. This is a talk by Professor John Varriano organised by Palzzo Falson Historic House Museum, Tuesday 21st February 2012 at Palazzo Santa Sofia, Mdina The illustrated talk was given in two parts, the first examining the ways in which food was considered as both a sexual metaphor and an agent of procreation during the Italian Renaissance. The second part will address the changing associations of wine with death in the ancient and early modern periods. Both parts are based on primary sources in literature and the visual arts. John Varriano is Professor Emeritus of Art History at Mount Holyoke College in South Radley Massachusetts. fer receiving his PH.D from the University of Michigan, he has written five books and more than fifty articles in subjects that range from architecture in Baroque Italy to literary myths of Rome, the realisim of Carravagio, and the history of gastronomy.
