| | Islamic Architecture in Malta II.AVI Duration : 85 Seconds Part of a small terrace of late-nineteenth-century Moorish houses by Emmanuel Galizia (1830-1906) in Rudolph Street, Sliema, Malta. As Chief Architect of Malta under the British, Galizia built the dramatic Turkish cemetery at Marsa (an old picture postcard of which can be seen offsite here), which was funded by the Sultan of Turkey, and for which he was made a member of the Order of Medjidie, awarded for distinguished services. This work was completed in 1874 ("Malta Family History"). He was also exposed to different influences on his travels. For example, later in the 1870s he was sent on two missions to Cyprus, with a special view to the practicalities of establishing a Maltese settlement there, during a time when many Maltese were emigrating from their overcrowded main island (see Obituary). Most sources report that the small complex of houses that he later built in the fashionable upper part of Sliema consisted of two houses at 104 and 106 Rudolph Street, named Alcazar and Alhmabra, the latter for his own summer residence, the former for the use of Giuseppe Cali (1849-1930), an important Maltese artist of Neapolitan parentage. Another source reports that there were three Moorish houses (Borg). However, the Sliema Residents' Association refers to four houses which he built "round about the end of the nineteenth century." These consist of two which "are two floors high with wooden gallarias with Persian blinds covering their windows" and another two which are "one floor ... | | My Choice - Mdina: Miklós Rózsa: King of Kings Duration : 368 Seconds King of Kings (1961) is an American motion picture epic made by Samuel Bronston Productions and distributed by Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer. Directed by Nicholas Ray, it is a retelling of the story of Jesus from his birth to his crucifixion and Resurrection. Complimenting this music we're showing photos of Malta's old Capital, Mdina, mostly taken at night by Choy Hong (Jasmine) Grech. King of Kings is also memorable for the music score by legendary composer Miklós Rózsa, which was nominated for a Golden Globe Award. Rózsa's most recent work at the time was the score for MGM's hugely successful religious epic Ben-Hur (1959), for which he won his third Oscar. Rózsa composed the scores for many of MGM's epic films, including Quo Vadis (1951) and El Cid (which he scored the same year as King of Kings). Miklós Rózsa (1907--1995) was a Hungarian-born composer trained in Germany and active in France, England, and the United States with extensive sojourns in Italy. Famous for his nearly one hundred film scores, he nevertheless maintained a steadfast allegiance to absolute concert music throughout what he called his "double life." | | My Choice - Benny & Tonia: The Silent City (Mdina, Malta) Duration : 190 Seconds "The Silent City" a beautiful happy melody by the Maltese popular Duo, Benny and Tonia. Music composed by Benny Grima. They are referring to Malta's Old Capital, Mdina and we're showing photos of this Medieval and beautiful former Capital of Malta. All photos are by Choy Hong (Jasmine) Grech. Music used with Benny's and Tonia's permission. MDINA Mdina, Città Vecchia, or Città Notabile, is the old capital of Malta. Mdina is a medieval walled town situated on a hill in the centre of the island. Punic remains uncovered beyond the city's walls suggest the importance of the general region to Malta's Phoenician settlers. Mdina is commonly called the "Silent City" by natives and visitors. Mdina was inhabited and possibly first fortified by the Phoenicians around 700 BC. The Phoenicians called it Maleth. Under the Roman Empire Malta became a Municipium and the Roman Governor built his palace in Mdina. Much of its present architecture reflects the Fatimid Period which began in 999 AD until the Norman conquest of Malta in 1091 AD. The Normans surrounded the city with thick defensive fortifications and widened the moat. Malta passed to the Order of Knights of the Hospital of St John of Jerusalem in 1530 AD. Mdina hosted the public ceremony in which each Grand Master swore an oath to protect the Maltese Islands and the rights of his subjects. A strong earthquake in 1693 AD led to the introduction of Baroque design within the cityscape. The Knights of Malta rebuilt the cathedral, to ... | | City Gate - a diary of demolition Duration : 49 Seconds A preview of Bettina Hutschek's documentary "City Gate - a diary of demolition". CITY GATE is a video documentary commissioned by AP, which shows, in the form of a subjective essay-film, the sequential demolition of the City Gate of Valletta prior to its new construction. "The film is the product of entire days spent, during several weeks in May 2011, in and around the site, observing and filming. I filmed falling stones, dust, workers, concrete, onlookers, pigeons, machines, tourists, and loads and loads of rubble. It was a slow process. Taking the gate apart was not as obvious as it seemed at the onset. After some days, the demolition machines had in my eyes mutated into humanoid monsters, working their way through layers of construction of former times, making space for a new construction, maybe even a new vision which was best epitomized by the city's pigeons: having lost their sleeping convention in the gate, the birds became homeless fragments of moving history. Watching the demolition had become a meditative practice." Screening from March 2 to March 23 2012 Mon. - Thu. 10am-4pm, Fri. 10am-1pm at 4 Sappers Street, Valletta, Malta This event was made possible with the support of: Malta Arts Fund, Telesystems, Steel Structures, BIB Joint Venture Tags :valletta, city gate, malta, hutschek, architecture, architecture project, art, documentary, demolition

| | Malta Series - Valletta, Republic Street [2008] Duration : 511 Seconds Valletta (Maltese: Belt Valletta or Città Umilissima) is the capital city of Malta. It is located in the central-eastern portion of the island of Malta and has a population of 6315[1]. Valletta, the Città Umilissima, is essentially Baroque in character, with elements of Mannerist, Neo-Classical and Modern architecture in selected areas. The city contains several buildings of historic importance, amongst which are St John's Co-Cathedral, formerly the Conventual Church of the Knights of Malta and home to the largest single work by Michelangelo Merisi da Caravaggio, his only signed work, and a priceless collection of seventeenth-century Flemish tapestries (alongside Republic Street); the Auberge de Castille et Leon, formerly the official seat of the Knights of Malta of the Langue of Castille, Léon and Portugal, now the office of the Prime Minister of Malta (found on the highest point of the city, above the bastions); the Magisterial Palace, built between 1571 and 1574, formerly the seat of the Grand Master of the Knights of Malta, now housing the Maltese Parliament and the offices of the President of Malta (opposite Palace Square along Republic Street); the National Museum of Fine Arts, a Rococo palace dating back to the late 1570s, which served as the official residence of the Commander-in-Chief of the Mediterranean Fleet during the British era, from 1789 onwards (in South Street); the National Museum of Archaeology, formerly the Auberge de Provence (Republic Street); the ...
