UP 1995 West with C&NW 8701 by Malta, Illinois on 3-6-2012
Duration : 71 Seconds

The Union Pacific's Chicago and Northwestern Heritage engine, UP 1995 along with C&NW 8701 run light by Malta, Illinois. An EMD SD70ACe and a GE C44-9W. One time where UP MoW worked in my favor. The 1995 originally got past me. But due to some problems at the Malta crossover, all rail traffic in both directions was stopped. So I was able to get ahead of it and set up at Malta. Thanks to Jason for the tip on this. Also, a big hello to young railfan Owen. Owen and his dad were also waiting for the 1995 and 8701 at Malta. As with most six-year-olds there was a lot of energy on display. But Owen kindly kept quiet for the video cameras while 1995 and 8701 rolled by. Thanks buddy.

My Choice - Comino, Malta: Plus Serene Melodies
Duration : 607 Seconds

We will take a tour of the tiny island of Comino which is part of the Maltese Archipelago. Photos are by Isabelle Mallia and you'll hear three serene melodies: 1 Vieni Sul Mar played by georgswa02 of Germany 2 Romantic Music 3 Wenn die alten Praterbäume rauschen When rushing the old Prater trees (Piano: Joe Hans Wirtl) Comino (Maltese: Kemmuna) is an island of the Maltese archipelago between the islands of Malta and Gozo in the Mediterranean Sea, measuring 1.35 square miles (3.5 km2) in area. It was named after the cumin seed that once flourished in the Maltese islands, Comino is noted for its tranquility and isolation. It has a permanent population of only four residents. One priest and one policeman commute from the nearby island of Gozo, to render their services to the local population and summertime visitors. Today, Comino is a bird sanctuary and nature reserve. The Tower of St Mary St Mary's Towers was built in 1618 by the Knights of Malta under Grandmaster Wignacourt. The tower formed part of a chain of defensive towers — the Wignacourt, Lascaris, and De Redin towers — located at vantage points along the coastline of the Maltese Islands, and greatly improved communications between Malta and Gozo. The tower is a large, square building with four corner turrets, located about 80 metres above sea level. The Tower itself is about 12 metres tall, with walls that are approximately 6 metres thick, and is raised on a platform and plinth that are approximately 8 metres high ...

Malta Historical Fencing Association - Promotional Video
Duration : 304 Seconds

Promotional video filmed for the launch of the Malta Historical Fencing Association in 2011. This video was recorded at our Sala d'Armi in Floriana and the Palace Armoury in Valletta. The Malta Historical Fencing Association is dedicated to the study and practice of European Martial Arts techniques. Our methods are based on the treatises and documents written by the fencing masters from the 13th to the 19th century, and the constant research and interpretations from practitioners worldwide. We would like to thank Heritage Malta and the Palace Armoury in particular for their cooperation and assistance both in the production of this video, and their participation in the launch. Malta
Duration : 209 Seconds

Malta is an island country in the Mediterranean Sea that lies south of the island of Sicily, Italy. The country is an archipelago, with only the three largest islands (Malta, Għawdex or Gozo, and Kemmuna or Comino) being inhabited. Gozo is an island of the Maltese archipelago in the Mediterranean Sea. Smaller, more remote and less built-up than Malta itself, it is a popular destination in its own right, particularly for more mature British and German couples. With pretty if unspectacular countryside, and interesting churches alongside historic fortifications and megalithic temples it makes a good excursion from Malta and an even better destination for a relaxed short break. ----------- MUSIC: Windswept Kevin MacLeod (incompetech.com) Licensed under Creative Commons "Attribution 3.0" creativecommons.org Song: incompetech.com incompetech.com

Natural History of the Maltese Islands
Duration : 458 Seconds

This book is available from www.bdlbooks.com 'The Natural History of the Maltese Islands as seen through a photographer's lens' takes the cause of nature conservation in Malta forward in more than one way. In its portraits of Maltese nature, it documents just how rich and vibrant our natural heritage is, making it easy to appreciate it in all its uniqueness. In its didactic and skill-building mission, this book also lays the foundation for creating wider interest in nature photography and Maltese natural heritage amongst present and future generations, serving to demonstrate the distinctiveness of nature in Malta to a wider audience.

Bir Miftuh Medieval Church Malta I (with music). AVI
Duration : 100 Seconds

Din l-Art Helwa is an NGO founded in 1965 to safeguard the historic, artistic and natural heritage of Malta. Here, Victor Rizzo, the treasurer of the organisation, kicks off a series about the key cultural heritage properties managed by the organisation in Malta, Gozo and Comino which are open to the public. This piece is about the ancient chapel of Bir Miftuh, which stands opposite Malta International Airport. Glance right as you exit MIA to catch a glimpse of it. The Chapel of Santa Maria ta' Bir Miftuh is an outstanding example of medieval architecture. Built almost 600 years ago, it saw the arrival of the Knights, was desecrated by the Turks during the Great Siege of 1565 and suffered bomb damage in the Second World War. Located in Gudja, it is one of the best preserved examples of a parish church of the 15th century. It was declared a parish in 1436 by Bishop Senatore de Mello and served as such until 1676 when the Parish Church of Gudja was built. It was never in the centre of a village but was had parish church status and served several villages. The chapel is free standing and shows a growing confidence in the handling of stone structures. It is simple and austere in design, with fine pointed stone arches on which rest the long stone roof slabs. It has a plain rectangular plan and measures about 11 by 14 metres. The chapel was originally larger and built in the shape of a cross. In the 16th century the rear end of the chapel was demolished and the stones were used ...

My Choice - Megalithic Temples Malta: Ziehrer
Duration : 597 Seconds

Seculo Nuovo, Vita Nuova, Waltz op. 498 (New Century, New Life) is a composition of Carl Michael Ziehrer and it is complimented by photos of four very old Megalithic temples found in Malta and Gozo. Ziehrer was born in Vienna. He was taught music by Simon Sechter, a famous Viennese hat-maker. Ziehrer studied music at the Vienna Conservatory, and began his career as a conductor in 1863. He was also a bandmaster. He was one of the musical rivals of Johann Strauss II, another composer of light music in Vienna. We are showing you Four Megalithic Temples found in Malta and Gozo. All have been described by the World Heritage Sites Committee as "unique architectural masterpieces." In 1992 they were designated a UNESCO World Heritage Sites. (Photos by Choy Hong (Jasmine) Grech). Ġgantija (Giants' Tower) is a Neolithic, megalithic temple complex in the village of Xaghra on the Mediterranean island of Gozo. The Ġgantija temples are the earliest of a series of megalithic temples in Malta. Their makers erected the two Ġgantija temples during the Neolithic Age (c. 3600-2500 BC), which makes these temples more than 5500 years old and the world's oldest manmade religious structures. Ħaġar Qim (Standing/Worshipping Stones) is a megalithic temple complex dating from the Ġgantija phase (3600-3200 BC) found in the village of Qrendi. The Megalithic Temples of Malta are amongst the most ancient religious sites on Earth. In 2009 work was completed on a protective tent. (Some photos were taken ...

Bir Miftuħ, Oldest Chapel in Malta, 1436
Duration : 347 Seconds

Built in 1436, Bir Miftuħ used to be the Chapel of the Parish. This parish doesn't exist any more, instead the Chapel has been included in the current Parish of Gudja (next to the airport Luqa). It's a very interesting chapel to visit since you can see how Catholicism used to built chapels (also churches) in the 15th Century. There's no luxury, no golden pillars, no monetary value can't be found. However, this chapel has left a even more important value to the rich history of Malta and its heritage. If you happen to wander close to the airport it's very easy to access.

Malta: The Mediterranean's best kept secret
Duration : 69 Seconds

Malta is a small island state, with a population of around 400000. The country's official languages are Maltese and also English, which is a language most Maltese speak as a result of a period of British rule that ended in 1964. The Maltese are known as friendly (but temperamental) people and are renowned for their hospitality. The vast majority of the Maltese are Catholic and the Church plays an important role in Maltese culture. Being one of the latest additions to the European Union, Malta is quickly developing into a top tourist resort and is competing with other South-European destinations for a larger share of tourists who seek out a holiday in the Mediterranean. Tourism is one of the main pillars of the Maltese economy and the island nation depends heavily on this sector. While investments are made to promote Malta in the rest of Europe, no single advertising slogan can bring across the benefit Malta offers over other Mediterranean destinations. Accommodation: Plenty of choice So what benefits are we talking about here? For starters, the various types of accommodation offered in Malta are suitable for different budgets and holiday experiences. There's an abundance of 3- and 4-star hotels that are ideal for family holidays, being of good quality at very reasonable package prices. For travellers who prefer to enjoy luxury there are several high-class hotels available in Malta, with global appeal, such as Malta's Hilton hotel and the Radisson hotels in St. Julian's ...
