My Choice - Marisa D'Amato: Blue Bayou (Filmed in Malta)
Duration : 238 Seconds

"Blue Bayou" sung by Malta's Queen of Country, Marisa D'Amato. This video was filmed at Wied iż-Żurrieq and at the Blue Grotto in Malta. We are using it with Marisa's permission. Blue Bayou is the title of a song written by Roy Orbison and Joe Melson and was originally sung by Orbison and later by Linda Ronstadt who made the song very popular. Marisa d'Amato has been in the local scenes since when she participated for the first time in the Song for Europe Festival of 1996 and in other festivals afterwards. She also took part in various musicals, "Jesus Christ Superstar", "The Sound of Music" and the leading role in the local produced musical, "Jisimni Katarina". But her career had a big turnover when she turned to Country Music. In 2000 she had the opportunity to sing in Louisiana and Tennessee where she performed in a concert with flatpicking champion, guitar player Steve Kaufmann and Dolly Parton's banjo player Gary Davis. A few months later Marisa released her second album, "Country Heart & Soul". She released other albums since then. In 2007 Marisa toured in Australia for 7 weeks and also performed in Ireland and UK. Her 2008 UK second tour was very successful, continuing her trips to uk in 2009, performing in leading country music festivals and events in Wolverhampton, Derby, Blackpool, Stoke, Poole & Birchwood. Also in 2009 Marisa did her 2nd Australian tour for 6 weeks performing in Melbourne, Brisbane & Sydney Apart from her singing career, Marisa hosts a weekly ...

AQUI & AJAZZ, Tania Maria Ao Vivo "Bom Bom Bom, Chi chi, Chi"
Duration : 448 Seconds

Born in São Luís, Maranhão, northern Brazil, she has a degree in law, and married early and had children. Tania Maria began playing the piano at the age of 7, became a leader at the age of 13, when her band of professional musicians, organized by her father, won first prize in a local music contest and went on to play for dances, in clubs and on the radio. Her father, a metal worker and a gifted guitarist and singer, had encouraged her to study piano so that she could play in his weekend jam sessions, where she first absorbed the rhythms and melodies of samba, jazz, pop music and Brazilian chorinho. Since then, she has never worked in anyone else's group. Maria's first album Apresentamos was released in Brazil in 1969, followed by Olha Quem Chega in 1971, but it was a move to France in the late 1970s that exploded Tania onto the international scene. At a concert in Australia, her formidable musical precision and freewheeling spirit caught the attention of the late American guitarist, Charlie Byrd, who recommended her to the late Carl Jefferson, founder of Concord Records.[2] Tania has played virtually every important jazz festival in the world and has appeared on countless television and radio programmes. Tania has recorded more than 20 albums and in 1985 was nominated for a Grammy Award in the category "Best Jazz Vocal Performance, Female".[3] Tania performed at prestigious venues like The Blue Note and famous festivals like the Monterey Jazz Festival in '81, '83 and '89 ...

My Choice - Qormi: Delirium Waltz
Duration : 413 Seconds

A truly beautiful waltz with very sweet passages - Delirien (Delirium) Waltz, Opus 212 by Josef Strauss. As we listen we take a tour of Qormi, a village in Malta. This waltz main theme has a relaxed, festive manner in its graceful poise. As usual, Josef deftly mixes moments of relaxation with bursts of celebration. The ensuing playful music is quite appealing, too, as is the demure return of the main theme. The waltz must be assessed as one of Josef Strauss' finest efforts in the genre. Qormi is one of the largest villages in Malta and it is divided into two parishes - that of St George which is a very old parish and the parish of St Sebastian. It is a very old village with some historic houses in it. Every year the two parished celebrate great feasts in honor of their saints. Several festivals are also held every year. Mgarr Malta: Hidmet Missirijietna - (Trades of Our Fathers)
Duration : 682 Seconds

Trades of Our Fathers 2011 - Friday 8th July 2011 from 5:30pm The first edition of 'Trades of Our Fathers' (Hidmet Missirijietna), a traditional agriculture and rural crafts festival, was held in Mgarr, Malta, right in the wide expanse of wheat fields and meadows of the Bingemma Valley. Mgarr farmers contributed the variety of animals, including heavy horses, donkeys, piglets, lambs, poultry birds and more. Besides the children's petting zoo, many animals were used for re-enactments and demonstrations. The traditional harvesting, winnowing and threshing of wheat (qiegha) was also performed repeatedly throughout the event. Several craftsmen showed off their skill in purpose built stalls, which featured wicker baskets, sheep wool looms, fishing net weaving and more. The event was closed off with a large BBQ dinner based on skewered pig prepared with a traditional rural recipe. All with the unique scenery of Mgarr acting as a backdrop. The Festival is the brainchild of a young Mgarr farmer, barely out of his teens, who has the Maltese agricultural traditions and heritage at heart. He spearheaded the effort to kickstart this event and rallied the Mgarr Youth Drama Company (MYDC - which he heads), the Mgarr Youth Committee as well as the local council to volunteer to put up this unique event. Being the first edition, attendance was not only very encouraging, but exceeded all expectations. The public flocked to Mgarr, not merely viewing but also participating in the re ...

My Choice - Marisa D'Amato: Torn Between Two Lovers
Duration : 190 Seconds

"Torn Between Two Lovers" sung by Malta's Queen of Country, Marisa D'Amato. "Torn Between Two Lovers" is the title of a pop song written by Peter Yarrow (of the folk music trio Peter, Paul & Mary) and Phillip Jarrell. It was inspired by Boris Pasternak's 1957 novel, Dr. Zhivago, which featured a man in love with two women. Yarrow originally intended the song to be sung by a man. Recorded at Muscle Shoals Sound Studio by Mary MacGregor in 1976, "Torn Between Two Lovers" reached #1 on the US pop chart in February 1977 and the easy listening chart in the final week of 1976 and first week of 1977. The song inspired the title of a television movie aired in 1979, starring Lee Remick, George Peppard, and Joseph Bologna, in which the song is played. Marisa d'Amato has been in the local scenes since when she participated for the first time in the Song for Europe Festival of 1996 and in other festivals afterwards. The video was recorded at The Wignacourt Tower Festival on March 27, 2011, an event marking the anniversary of the opening of Wignacourt Tower - a landmark in St Paul's Bay, Northeast of Malta. The main activities featured : Maltese traditional wedding re-enactment, Folklore shows, Vintage Carts with horses, Exhibition Stalls - Maltese agricultural tools, fresh flowers/veggies, sheep cheese, vintage bread cart & Maltese breads etc. Note: This video only shows some of the activities due to time limit. Festa
Duration : 931 Seconds

After spending some time in Malta last summer I learned that they really love their fire works as I saw every night fire work displays going off over the skyline for various festivals, "festas", in honor for various Saints. According to the locals sometimes houses get blown up as they tinker with the rockets and gunpowder in their cellars for next summer. I was invited by Diaz and Paulo to watch the festa in Msida. It was interesting and probably a bit dangerous too...

Bass Clarinet improv - NAFRA - Mediterraneo Jazz Festival 2010 - Elba
Duration : 245 Seconds

The NAFRA folk ensemble is a major international exponent of Malta's music heritage. Composer Ruben Zahra is committed to the revival of traditional Maltese instruments, particularly the Maltese bagpipe: iż-Żaqq. He established the NAFRA folk ensemble portraying a versatile programme of Mediterranean folk-fusion embellished by the unique sonority of Maltese traditional instruments. This innovative approach to Mediterranean music has led NAFRA to perform within major music festivals all over Europe as well as in Tunisia, Hong Kong and India. All the members of the NAFRA folk ensemble are classically trained musicians and the compositions of Ruben Zahra often adopt procedures derived from classical-contemporary music. NAFRA also collaborates with larger groups such as chamber ensembles, brass bands and even symphony orchestras portraying a fusion of folk roots and other musical styles. The music of NAFRA explores the sounds of a culture which is uniquely interesting in view of Malta's position as a 'cultural crossroad' of the Mediterranean. Ruben Zahra: zaqq (Maltese bagpipe), Nadine Galea: violin, Yuri Charyguine: accordion, Godfrey Mifsud: bass clarinet, Michael Galea: drums
