ex-Gaddafi touareg fighters launch offensive in North Mali (Azawad)
Duration : 83 Seconds

Mali, Azawad (مالي أزواد) January 20, 2011 | Al-Jazeera Eng. | Thousands of armed Malian ethnic tuaregs recently escaped from Libya (ليبيا) where they fought alongside security forces of toppled dictator Muammar Gaddafi (القذافي) against the 17 Revolution of the Libyan people return home in North Mali, and launch offensive against the government of Mali. The fight to defend the Libyan toppled dictator's decades-long regime, in which 3000 Malian and Nigerien Tuaregs died, was the latest in a string of battles Gaddafi had enlisted Tuareg mercenaries for (during the 17 fébruary Revolution the tuaregs were enrolled in Gaddafi's Brigade No. 9 "Foj Attasah" (الفوج التاسع), Regiment No. 32 Special Forces of Khamis Gaddafi (اللواء 32 معزز التابع لخميس القذافي) and brigade Al-maghawir (كتيبة المغاوير)). For decades, Tuareg fighters have been fighting Gaddafi's losing battles. They fought his losing war in Chad. They fought his losing fight in Lebanon. Finally, they fought his losing war against the Libyan people to save his corrupted and criminal regime last year. After their defeat in Libya they came back to north Mali their homeland and started attacking the Malian government and people regrouped under the banner of a group called MNLA. The MNLA is a movement with no known leader which was founded at the end of 2011 after a fusion of various tuareg ethnic militias and factions, including the Northern Mali Tuareg Movement (MTNM), whose leader Ibrahim Bahanga died in a road ...

In Mali, tensions continue following yesterday's military coup that deposed President Amadou Toumani Toure. FSRN's Amadou Timbiné is in Mali's capital, Bamako, where the airport is closed and people have been told by the coup leaders not to go to work. Amadou gave us an update on the situation on the streets. The United Nations Security Council, the United States and the West African Regional body Ecowas condemned the coup. France, the former colonial power, and the European Union have cut off aid. Meanwhile, Tuareg rebels continue to advance in the north of Mali. Mutiny in Mali over Tuareg rebellion
Duration : 66 Seconds

www.euronews.com Renegade soldiers in Mali claim to have seized control of the African country in a declaration on state TV. The mutineers, who referred to themselves as the National Committee for the Restoration of Democracy and State, cited the failure of the government to put down a separatist rebellion in the north as their motive. Dozens of people have been killed in the uprising by Tuareg nomads seeking to carve out a homeland in Mali's northern dessert region. Hours before the TV address there was sporadic shooting near the presidential palace in the capital, Bamako. It is not clear if there have been any casualties in the coup attempt. The army has long complained of a lack of arms and resources to tackle the rebels, who have been bolstered by heavily armed fellow Tuaregs returning from Libya's civil war. The whereabouts of President Amadou Toumani are unkown, but a government spokesman said he was in a secure location. Tourmani was due to step down after elections next month. Mali rebels advance in north, mutineers seek president
Duration : 135 Seconds

Tuareg rebels in northern Mali pushed south to occupy positions vacated by government forces, sources said, as mutinous soldiers in the distant capital sought to complete a coup by arresting the president. The MNLA rebels were approaching towns in the desert north, apparently taking advantage of the confusion created by a coup attempt in the capital Bamako by low-ranking soldiers angry at the government's handling of the uprising. By late on Wednesday, the mutinous soldiers had over-run the presidential palace, were in control of state television and roamed the streets of Bamako. But President Amadou Toumani Toure's whereabouts were still unconfirmed, officials said. Mali, which was flooded with men and weapons after Libya's civil war, was being rocked by crises - including the Tuareg-led rebellion, a growing Islamist threat and a food crisis - well before the soldiers mutinied. A Malian officer in the northern town of Kidal said rebels had occupied the military camp in Anefis, 100 km (60 miles) to the southwest, after government forces withdrew. "The army has pulled back to Gao," a source in Timbuktu, another main town in the north, told Reuters, asking not to be named. "There is no longer any military leadership. (The rebels) will take the towns in the north," he said. The MNLA rebels, whose numbers have been swollen by Malian Tuareg returning from the ranks of Libya's army, have been fighting since mid-January for an independent north. They have pushed government ...

Gaddafi paid these African mercenaries and they came to kill Libyans. LISTEN TO THEIR CONFESSIONS. Leaders of Chad, Niger, Mali and Sudan are also War Criminals for sending these mercenaries to kill Libyans. UN condemns Mali coup, World Bank stops aid
Duration : 137 Seconds

The UN Security Council has condemned the coup in Mali while top officials said fallout from the Libya civil war had increased the frustration of soldiers who ousted the president. Security Council members "strongly condemn the forcible seizure of power from the democratically-elected government of Mali by some elements of the Malian armed forces," said a council statement. The 15-nation body called on the soldiers "to ensure the safety and security of President Amadou Toumani Toure and to return to their barracks." The council demanded "the release of all detained Malian officials" and the "immediate restoration of constitutional rule and the democratically elected government," said the statement read to reporters by Britain's UN ambassador Mark Lyall Grant, the council president, for March. Al Jazeera's Azhar Sukri reports.

Tuareg's Return Home - Mali
Duration : 965 Seconds

May 1997 A report on the plight of the nomadic Tuareg people of the Sahara. For centuries the deserts of northern Mali have sustained the Tuareg; herdsmen known as the 'blue people' of the Sahara. But, in the 1990s the combination of droughts and civil war forced most to abandon their herds and flee to refugee camps in Mauritania. Now Moussa Ag Mohammed is returning to his land; but the loss of his herds, and the remorseless advance of the desert, means his ancient lifestyle is doomed. Mohammet Ali, whose lineage can be traced back twelve hundred years, digs with pitiful tools to maintain an ever sinking well against the dusty backdrop of the desert plains. He refused to fight or flee during the war, sticking by his philosophy 'If it is hot where you are, it's even hotter somewhere else'. Orphaned Faty and her brother tend their precious market garden on a patch of sand outside the village; every last drop of water must be pumped by hand. The Tuareg are still pessimistic that their way of life will die out as their children migrate to the towns for an 'easier' lifestyle

Mali | West African leaders forced to abandon visit following popular protests at Bamako airport
Duration : 205 Seconds

France 24, March 29, 2012 | The presidents of Ivory Coast and Burkina Faso on Thursday abandoned a trip to discuss with Mali's military commitee CNRDR after protest by supporters of the regime change stormed the airport runway. Ivorian leader Alassane Ouattara "was in the Malian airspace, he turned back", said a source at the Bamako airport. Burkinabe president, criminal and corrupted Blaise Compaore (long time friend of Gaddafi) was also no longer coming, said a security source. The meeting between the Malian military leaders and leaders from the Economic Community of West African States was to be held in Bamako airport around noon. The ECOWAS team was to also include the presidents of Benin, Liberia, Niger and Nigeria. Cancellation of the trip is a diplomatic blow to the regional leaders showing the lack of popular support to their adventurous initiative and growing concern over legitimacy of this foreign led initiative perceived as unacceptable foreign interference into Malian internal affairs and sovereignty. It remains to be seen if armed touareg militias who has been launching an ethnic war in the north of the country (Azawad) regrouped under the banner of "MNLA" and composed mainly of hundreds of Gaddafi's ex-mercenaries flying Libya after their defeat will continue their deadly attacks against villages and towns in the north region, notably the city of Kidal. I also saw them commandeer multiple vehicles and are continuing to shoot in the air. The new military junta that has deposited in the night between Wednesday and Thursday with President Amadou Toumani Toure has declared Thursday the closure of all air and land borders of the country with neighboring countries and set back to work in the administration to Tuesday March 27th, the 26th is traditionally a public holiday in Mali La nouvelle junte militaire qui a déposé dans la nuit de mercredi à jeudi le président Amadou Toumani Touré, a décrété jeudi la fermeture de toutes les frontières aériennes et terrestres du pays avec les pays voisins et fixé la reprise du travail dans l'administration au mardi 27 mars, la journée du 26 étant traditionnellement fériée au Mali.
