Timbuktu and beyond
Duration : 169 Seconds

In January 2008 I arrived in Bamako, capital of Mali, for the beginning of a journey that would take me along the river Niger to Timbuktu and beyond...into the north African desert to experience African music amongst the white dunes and the robed Touregs. This film gives a flavour of the first part of my journey.

Kandia Kouyaté-Doninke
Duration : 437 Seconds

Kandia Kouyaté Kandia Kouyaté (also known as Kandja Kouyaté, born in 1959(?) in Kita, Mali) is a Malian jelimuso (a female griot) and kora player; she has earned the prestigious title of ngara, and is sometimes appellated La dangereuse and La grande vedette malienne. Kouyaté's dense, emotional, hypnotic manner of singing and her lyrical talents have earned huge acclaim in Mali, though she remained relatively little known outside Africa, due to extremely limited availability of her recordings. Her home town of Kita is known for love songs, which form a large part of Kouyaté's repertoire. She also sings praise songs. Kouyaté's career began in the early 1980s, when she started using female choral vocals accompanying her. This practice was later picked up by stars like Mory Kante and Salif Keita, and is now an integral part of Malian music. In 1983, she recorded[1] two vinyl discs, Amary Daou présente Kandia Kouyaté and Kandja Kouyaté et LEnsemble Instrumental National du Mali. Her debut solo album is Kita Kan. Kandia Kouyaté suffered a stroke in late 2004, and it is speculated that she will not be able to record or perform again.

Apr 3, 2012 Mali_coup leader Amadou Sanogo interview
Duration : 210 Seconds

Mali coup leader Captain Amadou Sanogo said on Wednesday that he respected the sanctions the African Union (AU) and Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) placed in his country, and would bring the country back to constitutional order. Sanogo made these remarks in an exclusive interview with CCTV in Bamako, the country's capital, a day after AU imposed a travel ban and asset freezes against the leader, members of the military junta and parties involved with the unconstitutional order currently in Mali. "Mali is a member of ECOWAS. We do respect the decision and retake the order to go back to constitutional order," said Sanogo, adding that he wouldn't "keep power," but is ready to hand power to the people if requested. However, he said it would take a long time to reestablish constitutional order, and the priority now is the northern Mali Tuareg rebels issue, which Sanogo said was his motivation to stage the coup, as the government didn't give them the "equipment" or the "training" necessary to fight against the rebels. "I did this because it was the only way to stop damage," Sanogo said. "I'm not here for power. I don't even like it to be honest. Imagine, I'm in this office from morning to night, you don't even have personal life." Sanogo also apologized for the damages and looting to the foreigners' assets in the coup and protests. "Every single person from where you are from, that you live in this country, I swear to do my best to protect any individuals and ...
