It is just west of the Bani River (the Niger River passes well to the west and north). It has an ethnically diverse population of about 12000 (in 1987). It is famous for its mud brick (adobe) architecture, most notably the Great Mosque of Djenné which was rebuilt in 1907. In the past, Djenné was a centre of trade and learning, and has been conquered a number of times since its founding. It is the oldest known city in sub-Saharan Africa, and its historic city center was designated a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1988. 2008 Journey within Mali. Guided by Sandy Cissé resident of Bamako for a 12-day tour. This tour entailed both of us traveling together from Bamako to Tombouctou, Dogon Country and back. Treated like gold and with kid gloves by himself and his family and friends for 2 months was of a divine nature to the least. A few photos were taken around their home and neighborhood. The emphasis though was on video which is currently being made into a film. I couldn't have stumbled onto a better guide than Sandy. His profoundly gracious manners and inherent gift of always keeping at bay distractions and harm whether people or health related are impeccable. He made sure I ate in safe places, I was always in good company and got the royal treatment where ever I went. Well worth any price. Time spent under his care extends to unending possibilities as he has professional contacts and family and friends all over Mali and beyond. Through him and his family, my desire to meet various members of standing in Malian culture as well as the Ali Farka Touré family were made possible. The soundtrack, features Mr Touré's music, who passed away leaving his legacy to his equally exceptionally talented son Vieux Farka. Keep an ear open also for young Garba Touré who leads the multi-member band DIRÉSTAR from the village of Diré near Timbuktu.
