Myth of foreign origin or domination of Mali culture - Also Myth of Arabs bringing Mali architecture
Duration : 578 Seconds

To show the spread of ideas as going in both directions "Timbuctoo the mysterious" By Félix Dubois books.google.com "The scholars of Timbuctoo yielded in nothing to the saints and their miracles. During their sojourns in the foreign universities of Fez, Tunis, and Cairo, ' they astounded the most learned men of Islam by their erudition.' That these negroes were on a level with the Arabian savants is proved by the fact that they were installed as professors in Morocco and Egypt. In contrast to this we find that the Arabs were not always equal to the requirements of Sankore. ' A celebrated jurist of Hedjaz (Arabia), arriving in Timbuctoo with the intention of teaching, found the town full of Sudanese scholars. Observing them to be his superiors in knowledge, he withdrew to Fez, where he succeeded in obtaining employment.'" Added: This article discusses the myth of an introduction of architecture to Mali from outsiders "Al-Sahili : the historian's myth of architectural technology transfer from North Africa" by Suzan B. Aradeon www.persee.fr Read this translation of Ibn Khaldun "The Negroland of the Arabs examined and explained" page 61-65. Ibn Khaldun NEVER said architecture in west Africa was introduced by outsiders. He also makes it clear this part of Africa already had great cities and WAS NOT developed because of Arab involvement. Page 64 in this book you see Ibn Khaldun said "showed a model for an edifice" other translations that say introduce architecture are wrong On ...

Essakane Film NEW Trailer!
Duration : 312 Seconds

An updated trailer that highlights Tuareg and Malian culture as well as the awesome music to be heard at the Festival in the Desert. Includes music from Vieux Farka Toure and Tartit. Essakane Film is a feature length documentary about the most remote music festival in the world—the Festival au Désert—and the battle to make it happen. Once a year, just outside of Timbuktu in the sand dunes of the Sahara, a music festival that serves to sustain peace and resolve regional conflict rocks the socks off an audience of thousands for three days straight. From Robert Plant to Jimmy Buffett, musicians from around the world have journeyed through the mystical terrain of the Sahara to jam with Malian, Tuareg, and West African musicians at the Festival au Désert. As a homegrown approach to sustaining peace, democracy, and for developing tourism in Mali, the festival has brought significant cultural awareness and economic development to the local communities in the region and the tourism sector in Mali. But sadly, over the past few years, security warnings issued by Western governments have increased, affecting the attendance at the festival and threatening its viability. But that will not stop the festival organizers, the community, and the musicians who rock the stage from putting on another great show. The film is currently in post-production. In January of 2011 the filmmakers traveled to Timbuktu to film the Festival au Désert and conduct interviews with many of the film's ...

Nahawa Doumbia - Banani (Mali)
Duration : 255 Seconds

Nahawa Doumbia is one of the most popular singers from the Wassoulou region in South Mali. She speaks to the younger generation of West Africa through her lyrics about love, the position of women in Malian society, and the plight of the African refugees in France. Her voice soars to didadi, a lilting dance rhythm from her native Wassoulou region; added to the musical mix are the jazz and techno samples of French DJ Frédéric Galliano. Traditional instruments -bala, kamele ngoni, and jembe- along with bass and acoustic guitar back up Nahawa's vibrant vocals. Nahawa Doumbia was born in the small town of Mafélé, in the Sikasso region (next to the Ivory Coast's border). Her grandmother had to raise the newborn because Nahawa's mother died shortly after giving birth. Nahawa Doumbia's grandmother lived in Manankoro, near Bougouni, the most important city in the Wassoulou region (south of Bamako, Mali's capital). The Wassoulou region is well known for generating some of the best singers in Mali, like Oumou Sangare, Sali Sidibe or Dieneba Diakité. Even though Nahawa Doumbia's family was not part of the jali tradition (the Manding caste that performs music), Nahawa's mother predicted before she died that her daughter would be a singer. This is something that her family tried to prevent, resorting to the magical powers of blacksmiths, but to no effect. The young Malian woman was discovered by civil servants from the Ministry of Culture when she was singing with her friends. Despite ...

Nouakchott : Soirée de la "Culture Commune" à La Case
Duration : 3718 Seconds

Duration : 892 Seconds

To listen to the full 3-hour interview, subscribe at www.veritasradio.com Men Zebah Hasati & Nehez Meniooh S ynopsis What a gift it is to be exposed to the traditional spiritual teachings of ancient Africa. This week's guests are Nehez Meniooh and Men Zebah Hasati, American initiates into the secret teachings of the late Master Naba Lamoussa Morodenibig, a Dogon High Priest whose lineage comes from Burkina Faso, West Africa. Master Naba founded and taught at The Earth Center in Chicago from the late 1990s until his death in 2008. Burkina Faso, we learn, along with Mali, comprise the area considered the traditional capital of Africa, home to the secret teachings of ancient Merita, (Africa). "These countries are some of the poorest by Western standards. But they are the richest in traditional knowledge." The teachings had to be kept secret during generation after generation of invasion "just to stay alive and get the knowledge to the next generation." Earth Center students take annual missions into the heart of these ancient wisdom locales where they live among the spiritual leaders and visit sites significant to the teachings. True learning must be experienced. "Education is your right to understand for yourself, without the filter of someone else's agenda." The term "colonialism" takes on broad meaning in this discussion. Colonialism, a "momentum of evil," is a force separating the individual from knowledge of self and harmony with all things. This force has many faces ...

Concert to Benefit Mali Artists
Duration : 288 Seconds

I shot this video while traveling through Mali in January. Israeli and Malian artists have taken the initiative of establishing a new friendship based on art, music & culture. Many Israelis have travelled to Mali with the purpose of friendship and cooperation, each one of them has returned to Israel satisfied with stories of the warmth and kindness of the Malian people. As Nelson Mandela said: "Artists reach areas far beyond the reach of politicians. Art, especially entertainment and music, is understood by everybody, and it lifts the spirits and the morale of those who hear it" Here's the news... This is not a charity event, this is a friendship event. Although we will be raising funds for musicians in Mali, our main goal is to strengthen the relationship we have been building with artists and the people of Mali. Mali is in the grip of an unprecedented political crisis, one of the most serious since the West African country gained independence from France in 1960. Mali's economy is crippled due to armed conflict in the North and a military coup d'état that has taken control over the country. Ever since the conflict began, Mali's citizens are being negatively affected in terms of security, health and in their daily life routine. A lack of tourism due to instability over the last few months has made life very difficult for local artists and especially hard for those who only perform locally. Through this event we want to show solidarity with artists in Mali, we also hope ...

Music School in Kirina, Mali | Playing For Change
Duration : 470 Seconds

playingforchange.com - This video is available in English, French, and Spanish (see links below), and was made possible by the hard work and dedication of the Playing For Change Foundation, and through the support of the Playing For Change Community. One Love! Our friend Mahamadou Diabate, brother of famed Kora player Toumani Diabate and a wonderful musician in his own right, approached the Playing For Change Foundation about the possibility building a music school in his native country of Mali. Thanks to his help and guidance, PFCF broke ground on its third music school on the African continent this year: Ecole de Musique de Kirina (Music School of Kirina). The school is located in the village of Kirina, approximately 25 miles (40 km) south of Mali's capital city, Bamako. Kirina is a Griot village without any electricity, where the inhabitants live in humble straw roofed houses made of bricks that have dried in the sun's heat. The Griots play an essential role in Malian culture: they are the keepers of oral history and traditions, passing them on through music and poetry. The school will help the people of Kirina preserve and share their musical traditions, which have been slowly disappearing due to lack of teaching resources. The school opened its doors in October of 2010, and now offers classes in kora, djembe, balafon, and voice, as well as a workshop to teach the building and repair of traditional instruments. To learn more about the Playing For Change Foundation ...
