There has not been any traditional iron smelting in Africa since the 1960's, in part due to the importing of cheaper substitutes. The building of the furnaces and the work involved in the actual production is deeply entwined with ritual, symbolism and gender. This film describes in great detail every aspect of the event, from the selection of the site of the reconstruction - which is the oldest remaining furnace site in the region, last active in 1961 - to the final result. The Dogon, an outwardly primitive African tribe from modern-day Mali, preserve a detailed cosmology in ancient form, cast in the themes, symbols and storylines of the classic world mythologies, and couched in the clearest of modern terms, yet expressed using ancient Egyptian words. The cosmology is founded on an aligned ritual shrine that takes the same form and evokes the same symbolism as a Buddhist stupa, and culminates in a religious tradition that expresses itself through many of the signature rituals of Judaism, such as the wearing of skull caps and prayer shawls, the practice of circumcision, and the celebration of a Jubilee year. This presentation is an introduction to a pivotal culture that appears to stand at the very crossroads of ancient knowledge.

Varying from corpse to corpse, and of course royal mummies had stronger salts and longer, greater care taken into the process of mummification. The mummy I showed with the nappy hair she wasen't royalty so the salt did not change the texture and color of her hair. There has been evidence of cortex keratin oxidation in ancient Egyptian hair presumed to be the result of the strong alkaline ontent in natron used. The Hair of Earlier Peoples, Don Brothwell and Richard Spearman p427-436 in Science in Archaeology, eds. D Brothwell and E Higgs 1963 Hair is largely made up of the fibrous protein keratin. This substance is extremely resistant to decomposition and enzymatic digestion, mainly owing to the presence of disulphide cross linkages of the amino acid cystine. These join together the long polypeptide chains of the molecule. If the crosslinkages are broken by reduction or oxidation, altered keratin is readily attacked by proteolytic enzymes. This resistance of keratin explains durability of hair in ancient burials...These changes can occur on the living animal; thus atmospheric weathering of the fleece of sheep results in loss of cystine from the exposed tips of the fibres. Permanent waving alters keratin cross linkages, and these changes have been detected using florescence microscopy. It is probable that if the preparations employed during mummification contained reducing or oxidizing agents or alkaline substances the hair keratin would be damaged... Normal human hair had ...

A performance of the so-called "La Fille mal gardée" Pas de deux by Yulia Tikka & Vasily Tkachenko. Taken from the 2008 graduation performance of the Vaganova Academy of Russian Ballet. Mariinsky Theatre, St. Petersburg. This pas de deux is a typical early Soviet-era hodge-podge that everyone in the ballet world believes is by Petipa. Like many of the pas de deux that survive from Imperial Russia, most modern-day companies, competitions, etc. attribute the choreography of this pas de deux to Petipa, or "after Petipa". A better way to credit these old pieces is to state that the choreography is merely "traditional". There is over a century of tinkering from dancers, Ballet Masters, choreographers, etc. in the choreographic text you see here. **Music - 1. Adage - Peter-Ludwig Hertel 2. Variation I - Riccardo Drigo. This is originally the " Variation du Génie de la forêt" from Lev Ivanov's 1887 ballet "La Forêt enchantée". The solo was likely added to that ballet circa 1889, as it is not in the original published score of that ballet. The specifics of how it managed to find its way into this pas de deux is not known to me, though Gorsky, Sergeyev, Dudinskaya or Pyotr Gusev are likely to blame. 3. Variation II - Riccardo Drigo. This variation (which is also found in the so-called "Harlequinade" Pas de deux) was originally not a variation at all.
