| | Super Rail Band from Bamako, Mali @ Music Meeting, Nijmegen june 12, 2011 Duration : 494 Seconds Super Rail Band from Bamako, Mali at the Music Meeting Nijmegen 12 june 2011. Great concert, great show. The Rail Band, formed in 1970, is one of the most popular groups in the history of Malian music; it was later known as Super Rail Band, Bamako Rail Band or, most comprehensively and formally, Super Rail Band of the Buffet Hotel de la Gare, Bamako. Its fame was built upon the mid-20th century craze for Latin — especially Cuban — jazz music which came out of Congo in the 1940s. The Rail Band was one of the first West African acts to combine this mature Afro-Latin sound with traditional instruments and styles. In their case, this was built upon the Mande Griot praise singer tradition, along with Bambara and other Malian and Guinean musical traditions. Their distinctive sound came from combining electric guitar and jazz horns with soaring Mandinka and Bamabara lyrical lines, African and western drums, and local instruments such as the kora and the Balafon. At their height of fame in the 1970s, the Rail Band played to sold out venues and even stadia across West Africa, and launched solo careers for many of its members, including legendary vocalists Salif Keita and Mory Kante. | | Balla Kouyate & World Vision: Traditional Malian Music from Massachusetts Duration : 4096 Seconds Balla Kouyate is a griot and virtuoso player of the balaphon. Considered the predecessor of the xylophone and the first Mande instrument, the balafon is made up of wood slats of varying lengths. The slats are secured over two rows of calabash gourds, which serve as natural amplifiers. Each gourd is punctured with small holes over which Balla places thin plastic tape. The vibrating air rattles the plastic to create the desired sound. Were he back home in Mali, Balla would use spider webs (collected from kitchen walls) to cover the holes. The first known balafon dates back to the 13th century and remains under the guardianship of the Kouyate family. It is considered a UNESCO-protected Masterpiece of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity. Once a year it is brought out and played during a ceremony. In this concert Kouyate performs with singer Adjaratou "Tapani" Demba, Sekou "Pablo" Dembele, Makane Kouyate, Idrissa Kone, Daniel Day, and Raja Kassis. Speaker Biography: To say that Kouyate was born into a musical family is an understatement. His family lineage goes back over 800 years to Balla Faseke, the first of an unbroken line of djelis, or griots, in the Kouyate clan. The members of this family are regarded as the original praise-singers of the Malinke people, one of the ethnic groups found across much of West Africa. Djelis are the oral historians, musicians and performers who keep alive and celebrate the history of the Mande people of Mali, Guinea and other West ... Tags :library, congress, mali, music
| | Music School in Kirina, Mali | Playing For Change Duration : 470 Seconds playingforchange.com - This video is available in English, French, and Spanish (see links below), and was made possible by the hard work and dedication of the Playing For Change Foundation, and through the support of the Playing For Change Community. One Love! Our friend Mahamadou Diabate, brother of famed Kora player Toumani Diabate and a wonderful musician in his own right, approached the Playing For Change Foundation about the possibility building a music school in his native country of Mali. Thanks to his help and guidance, PFCF broke ground on its third music school on the African continent this year: Ecole de Musique de Kirina (Music School of Kirina). The school is located in the village of Kirina, approximately 25 miles (40 km) south of Mali's capital city, Bamako. Kirina is a Griot village without any electricity, where the inhabitants live in humble straw roofed houses made of bricks that have dried in the sun's heat. The Griots play an essential role in Malian culture: they are the keepers of oral history and traditions, passing them on through music and poetry. The school will help the people of Kirina preserve and share their musical traditions, which have been slowly disappearing due to lack of teaching resources. The school opened its doors in October of 2010, and now offers classes in kora, djembe, balafon, and voice, as well as a workshop to teach the building and repair of traditional instruments.
