Timbuktu heritage 'under threat'
Duration : 172 Seconds

UNESCO has voiced alarm over the safety of Timbuktu's cultural heritage, following reports that rebels have over-run and looted centres containing thousands of ancient books and documents that bear testimony to the city's extraordinary history. In 1990, the UN put the legendary Malian city on the list of World Heritage sites in danger but the two main threats facing it were desertification and human neglect. This situation has now been compounded by insecurity, vandalism and the prospect of war. Al Jazeera's Mohamed Val reports from Timbuktu.

Pro-al Qaeda rebels destroy saint's tomb in Mali. CSF Rieti
Duration : 44 Seconds

Islamist rebels in the African country of Mali have vandalized the tomb of a 16th century Muslim saint, drawing indignation from local residents. Local officials in Timbuktu, northern Mali, say Islamist fighters of al Qaeda-linked Ansar Dine broke off doors and wooden gates of the grave of Sidi Mahamoud Ben Amar and burned them on Saturday. The Islamist rebels are believed to have destroyed the ancient remains -- an object of worship by local people -- in opposing idolatry. Reports say local residents grew angry at the vandalism, with some vowing revenge toward the rebels. Islamic cultural remains in Timbuktu were classified as a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1988. Last month, the UN agency warned of the possible destruction of the World Heritage sites in Mali by rebels. In Mali, the government collapsed in a coup in March. Rebel groups have swept through northern areas, joined by Tuareg tribesmen and mercenaries returning home from Libya after the collapse of the government of Colonel Muammar Qaddafi last year. Another rebel group, MNLA, declared an independent state in the north. But Ansar Dine rejects the secession on the grounds that its objective is to impose Islamic law on all of Mali. Balla Kouyate & World Vision: Traditional Malian Music from Massachusetts
Duration : 4096 Seconds

Balla Kouyate is a griot and virtuoso player of the balaphon. Considered the predecessor of the xylophone and the first Mande instrument, the balafon is made up of wood slats of varying lengths. The slats are secured over two rows of calabash gourds, which serve as natural amplifiers. Each gourd is punctured with small holes over which Balla places thin plastic tape. The vibrating air rattles the plastic to create the desired sound. Were he back home in Mali, Balla would use spider webs (collected from kitchen walls) to cover the holes. The first known balafon dates back to the 13th century and remains under the guardianship of the Kouyate family. It is considered a UNESCO-protected Masterpiece of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity. Once a year it is brought out and played during a ceremony. In this concert Kouyate performs with singer Adjaratou "Tapani" Demba, Sekou "Pablo" Dembele, Makane Kouyate, Idrissa Kone, Daniel Day, and Raja Kassis. Speaker Biography: To say that Kouyate was born into a musical family is an understatement. His family lineage goes back over 800 years to Balla Faseke, the first of an unbroken line of djelis, or griots, in the Kouyate clan. The members of this family are regarded as the original praise-singers of the Malinke people, one of the ethnic groups found across much of West Africa. Djelis are the oral historians, musicians and performers who keep alive and celebrate the history of the Mande people of Mali, Guinea and other West ...

MALI - Africa - Djenné
Duration : 691 Seconds

In the town of Djenné in Mali (Western Africa) you can find the famous loam mosque. On Mondays there is a big market in front of the mosque. Not only the mosque is made of loam, but a large part of the town as well. The town is registered on the Unesco World Heritage list. I recorded this video in January 2005. This copy comes from my Mali-film on DVD. Unfortunately I don't have the original footage anymore.
