Essakane Film Fundraising Trailer
Duration : 339 Seconds

Essakane Film fundraising trailer. Initially produced in October of 2010 for our successful Kickstarter campaign. In May of 2011 the images were updated to include originally shot footage from the 2011 Festival in the Desert. Essakane Film is a feature length documentary about the most remote music festival in the world—the Festival au Désert—and the battle to make it happen. Once a year, just outside of Timbuktu in the sand dunes of the Sahara, a music festival that serves to sustain peace and resolve regional conflict rocks the socks off an audience of thousands for three days straight. From Robert Plant to Jimmy Buffett, musicians from around the world have journeyed through the mystical terrain of the Sahara to jam with Malian, Tuareg, and West African musicians at the Festival au Désert. As a homegrown approach to sustaining peace, democracy, and for developing tourism in Mali, the festival has brought significant cultural awareness and economic development to the local communities in the region and the tourism sector in Mali. But sadly, over the past few years, security warnings issued by Western governments have increased, affecting the attendance at the festival and threatening its viability. But that will not stop the festival organizers, the community, and the musicians who rock the stage from putting on another great show. The film is currently in post-production. In January of 2011 the filmmakers traveled to Timbuktu to film the Festival au Désert and conduct ...

Tinariwen - Aman Iman (Water is Life) - (7) Imidiwan Winakalin
Duration : 264 Seconds

Tinariwen are a nomadic band of Touareg people that was formed in 1982. They have produced two studio albums (although many cassette recordings of their earlier 'informal' albums exist) that represent true, rhythmic tribal tunes. Their songs, sung mostly in French and Tamashek, mainly cover the yearning felt for independence of the Touareg people from the government of Mali, as well as the sounds and feelings of desert life, a stark way of living reflected in the title of their second studio album Aman Iman ('Water is Life'). They came to world attention in 2001 after performing at a Malian music festival and have since travelled around the US and Europe to perform at various niche festivals. They have become increasingly popular among lovers of world music, as well as acting as a living icon of a somewhat oppressed people channeling their hopes, feelings, yearnings and desires through music, and in that way are revolutionary. They are also believed to be the first Touareg band to use electric guitars. If you like world music, you will love Tinariwen. If you haven't heard much world music, Tinariwen are the apt choice to broaden your horizons. :)

Mali: SWEET Didadi (didadee) Music, Drums and Beautiful Chants!
Duration : 106 Seconds

www.earthcds.com Didadi is a rhythm that can be used by young people to compete at festivals and celebrations. Didadi can be played for the expected arrival of an important person or at end-of-the-year holidays. Some say it originates from the Bougouni circle , of Mali's Sikasso region. The didadi is also organized during the end of the year holidays. What many of us know as a dunun (double sided drum) is here called didadidunun and is the instrument played for the didadi . The hand plays the drum on the skin opposite the one hit by the wooden drumstick complementing the stick's playing. Djembes are also used as accompaniement and one for solo or "lead".

Against her father's wishes, drawing on inspiration from her cousin Ali Farka Touré, Arby pursued music as a way to discuss issues that are important to her fellow countrymen, from love, peace, family, women's issues, development, democracy, and the everyday lives of the people. Her music includes sounds of the banjo, ngoni, electric guitar, drums traditional violin, and the calabash mixed with languages from Arabic, French, Songhai, and Tamashek. After achieving much success as a young musician, Khaïra married at the age of 14. She tried to continue singing, but was forced to stop until she sought a divorce 8 years later.
