Currently home to a domestic airfield, Hanimaadhoo island is to be completely transformed with new terminal building in the lagoon. Haptic and Narud Stokke Wiig proposed a single terminal building, with all functions under a dramatic curving roof. The roof is formed as a timber diagrid structure with a lightweight, highly insulated skin. The terminal employs several passive design measures, from north facing rooflights and large roof overhangs, to minimise solar gain, to rainwater harvesting and roof mounted photovoltaics. The new airport embraces the Maldivian culture and natural setting through preservation of the island's coastline and landscape and in the selection of natural materials.
