Raees Radio Hithaabu 26.06.2009 (Part 1 of 3) President Mohamed Nasheed has said that a detoxification centre to treat drug addicts will be opened in the Maldives soon. The President made this statement in his radio address to the nation which was broadcast on the Voice of Maldives 7.15 this morning. The centre is expected to be established next month. As today is the International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking, the Presidents radio address was centred on the drug issue faced by the country. The President said that successfully rehabilitating drug addicts required detoxification and therefore the government attached a high priority to opening a detoxification centre. Today is also marked the International Day in Support of Victims of Torture. The President said, in the Maldives, drug abuse and inhuman torture by the government authorities in the past were linked. He said that youngsters convicted of drug abuse had in the past been subjected to torture, which, he said, had not resolved the issue of drug abuse. Underlying that there were several issues faced by the health care providers in the Maldives, the President said the government was addressing those issues. He said the services available at the hospitals and other centres would see significant improvement within the next three months. On the foreign currency shortage, the President attributed the problem to the reduction in tourist arrivals due to the global economic recession. He said providing ...

The Lakshadweep coral reefs (12 atolls and 5 submerged coralline banks) lie off the central west coast of India. The reefs are important to the local population mainly in terms of fisheries and building materials. Though the reefs were healthy two decades back, continued human interference and the bleaching in 1998 have caused a severe loss of coral biodiversity. Recovery from bleaching impacts has just begun. The major fishing activity is for tuna and sharks. Fishing in the reef and lagoons is only for sustenance. Recreational fishing and ornamental fish trade do not exist. The main cause of decline in coral health, at least in shallow waters, is coral mining, collection of souvenir corals and shells, dredging for navigational channels, resuspension of silt consequent to mechanized boat traffic, unsustainable fishing practices, especially for bait fishes and non-respect of carrying capacity. The local population has not yet fully realized the impacts of the 1998 bleaching. No atoll in the Lakshadweep has been declared so far as protected; however, coral removal and hunting for some marine animals like turtles and dolphins has been banned. Despite the ban, coral removal still occurs. A management strategy is being developed and systematic monitoring has now begun. The current status of the coral reefs at Lakshadweep is far from satisfactory. Still it is possible to reverse the situation provided some serious efforts on the part of all stakeholders are made. Starting with the Atlantic & Caribbean, we go diving with Justine Shapiro in Dominica, and travel west to Turks & Caicos where Megan McCormick goes diving for conch. The next spot on our list takes us to the Outer Banks off North Carolina with Holly Morris, who encounters some very large sharks. We then travel to Florida's Gulf Coast where Holly has a close encounter with a very friendly manatee. We then head over to Africa's east coast to the island of Madagascar, for some wreck diving with Ian Wright. Heading north, we go for a beautiful dive in the Red Sea with Justine Shapiro. We continue our diving trip around the world to the Maldives, where Megan goes on several beautiful dives. From there we hit the Banda Islands in Indonesia's Celebes Sea, joining Mark Crowdy on a dive there. Our journey takes on to the Philippines with Shilpa Mehta. From there we head further east, to the South Pacific, where Ian takes in some wreck diving in the Solomons, and feeds some sharks in Fiji. In Micronesia, Megan goes on several amazing dives in Jellyfish Lake, and she gets very close to some large and gentle manta rays. After that we follow Megan to the fabled Great Barrier Reef, where we see the kind of diving that has made it famous.
