Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng joined the German community in celebrating the Malaysian-German Society 50th anniversary. The German Ambassador to Malaysia, His Excellency Dr Gunter Gruber announced that for the first time in the history of the German Embassy in Malaysia, Germany will celebrate the German Unification Day on 3rd October in Penang. In his speech, he also joked that CM Lim is the 'most popular man in Malaysia'.

Part 2| Does Malaysia's education system contribute to polarization of Malaysian society? Produced by Indrani Kopal Many deny that the dual system have contributed to racial polarisation and blame this on the country's ethnic based political party system and government policies. These discriminatory policies, such as access to college and university education, job opportunities in the government sector, poor career advancements for those already in government, they say, serve only to alienate the non-Malay population. So where do we go from here? Stick to a system that seems to be in denial of the needs of present day realities? Realities where globalisation is just not a buzz word but a recipe for national economic well-being and where chauvinism has less of a place in a global society. Or remain where we are and continue deepening resentment and distrust with each race championing their own language biases; ensuring that we are a divided nation. Speak to 'old timers' and they lament that it wasn't like this. There was a lot more acceptance, understanding then. But those were the days when national schools were popular with just about everyone, regardless of race. The existence of the vernacular school system is however guaranteed under the Federal Constitution. It is the right of Malaysian communities to have schools where subjects are taught in their ethnic tongues. And this is not going to change. Mahsuri: The Legend As children growing up in Malaysia, our ears were no strangers to tales of legends and folklore of zealous kings, old witches' curses, damsels in distress... Some were told as purely fables to teach morals to little kids; some were told to preserve tradition and culture; while others were actually inspired by true events. On 15 February 2012, the UCLU Malaysian Society is proud to present our annual theatrical production - the retelling of the famous historical legend of MAHSURI. The story begins in Langkawi, long before it was the prosperous tourism hub we know it as today. The brave Wan Darus goes off to war against Siam, leaving behind his wife; the beautiful, gentle-natured Mahsuri, to care for their only child. An enigmatic travelling poet soon wanders into the village, and the two strike up a strong friendship. Mahsuri's enemies soon see this as an opportunity to wreak havoc; and a series of betrayal and deception ensues, leading to consequences far more devastating and shocking than any of them could have imagined.
