Jon Bagul, born in Sabah and now living and working in Kuala Lumpur, elevates the traditional art of batik to something sublime: his light, detailed brush strokes and refreshing combinations of vibrant colors allow the viewer to step into his paintings. The uniqueness of his designs, which still retain traditional elements, are not just popular with residents of Kuala Lumpur but are also selling well to personal collectors from around the world. Recently one of Jon's paintings was presented to the Chinese President by the Malaysian Prime Minister at a ceremony to celebrate Sino-Malaysian relations. No better artist could have been chosen to represent both the traditional and modern aspects of art in Malaysia. Batik painting, using as it does, silk as its basis has enabled Jon to extend his work into soft furnishing and interior design accessories, including table runners and tablecloths, floor and throw cushions. These unique and desirable items, all with his trademark flowers are garnering interest from many quarters and he has been enjoying commissions from local corporations, private individuals and foreign and local dignitaries. Pahang, 28 April 2008 - The last weekend saw a group of passionate sea-loving artists, marine science students and enthusiasts getting together in Tioman Island in conjunction with World Earth Day and International Year of the Reef celebrations, to perform a feat which created an entry in the Malaysia Book of Records for the World's Longest Underwater Painting. Organised by CoRAL Malaysia (Malaysian Coral Reef Conservation Society), a society whose mission is to increase public awareness on marine conservation issues, brought about 50 people from the National Art Gallery, Association of Artists of Various Resources' (APAD) from Singapore, Marine Park, universities, divers and members of the media to congregate at Nazri's Place, a resort located at Kampung Air Batang of Tioman from the 25 to 28 April 2008 in an attempt to paint the world's longest painting, underwater. The dives began the following day after a checkout dive the day before. Sketches were made in plus sizes by 24 artists, 11 from Malaysia and 13 from Singapore, using oil pastels in little mesh bags carried with them. Some astonishing sketches of barracudas and octopuses with schooling fish and branching corals lined the canvas, a specially sized canvas to withstand the elements of salt water. The German Alumni Association Kuala Lumpur (GAAKL) and the Goethe-Institut Malaysia jointly organised an exhibition entitled "The German Connection : Art", in collaboration with Pelita Hati House of Art. The exhibition was officiated by HE Dr. Günter Gruber, Ambassador of the Federal Republic of Germany, on Tuesday, August 19, 2008 at 8.00pm. Initiated by Dr. Volker Wolf, Director of Goethe-Institut Malaysia, the exhibition is a "cultural welcome" to Dr. Gruber, who has recently been appointed Ambassador to Malaysia. The event is a showcase of art as the link between Germany and Malaysia as well as the artists from both countries: German artists who live and work in Malaysia such as Askandar Unglehrt, Gisela Rademacher and Volker W Hamann; Malaysian artists like Noor Mahnun Mohamad, Alex Moh and Wong Hoy Cheong who have trained, worked in Germany or in some manner connected to the country. Other artists featured include Raja Shariman, Mariam Jutta, Goh Lee Kwang, Ilse Noor, Jalaini Abu Hassan, Shooshie Sulaiman and Wong Perng Fey. Expect to be thrilled by paintings, sculptures, pottery and photography amongst the works. Details on individual pieces will be available at the exhibition and from the artists at the opening ceremony or by subsequent appointment. The exhibition will remain open until Saturday, August 30, 2008, at Pelita Hati House of Art. Opening hours are from 10.00am to 6.00pm, closed on Sunday.

With the launch of the insightful piece of art called the WALLSCAPES: The Merdeka Painting, commissioned by Datuk Yap Lim Sen from Australian Chinese artists Shen Jiawei, Wang Lan, and Wang Xu, Rachel Chan Suet Kay interviewed the artists on their study of Malaysian modern history, how they went about collecting, coordinating, and composing their documentation of the struggles of the Malaysian peoples in their effort to achieve Independence, as well as mythical and infrastructural representation of the classical histories of Malaysia such as the Garuda. While Shen Jiawei and Wang Xu crafted the imagery of the figures prominent in our history, Wang Lan created the background scenes which links the different epochs all together.
