This is a small site with an ambitious brief. The challenge was to fit a full fledged office, Dining Hall, Conference Centre, Theatre, Nursery, Gym, Public Gallery, 2 storey car park into a small site - and within budget! The concept is a contemporary building that responds to the peculiar Tropical climate of Malaysia. The design evolved numerous times to the present form. The Final Sketch Design was completed in 2 weeks. Physical Construction took two and half years. A dramatic curved roof protects the building from the harsh tropical sun and monsoon rain. Large overhangs cover the entire perimeter of the building. The front of the building faces West. Generous usage of aluminum louvers shades the building from low afternoon sun. The building itself is actually rectangular in shape, the columns are spaced at intervals of 8.3 meters. 8.3 meters grid is derived from the car parking width of 3 cars. The curved roof, the curves louvers and curved canvas canopy create an illusion of a rounded and curved building form. This is an energy efficient building. The roof and sun shades greatly reduce heat loading to the building. A high percentage of direct sun light is blocked from reaching the building at all times. This building uses a lot less energy for cooling. This building is also designed to be earth-quake proof. The roof frames were set-out on a factory floor, inspected and approved by the Architect and Engineer before a Life- Size mock-up was erected in the factory. The ...

This is the trailer I made for Assembly of Landscape Architecture Student Malaysia (ALAM) 2010 that will be organized by my school. The trailer is about the transition of ALAM 2009 ( the fur thing - 2009 logo) to the 2010 ALAM . Well, the theme of ALAM 2010 - There is no place like Home is about how we can make this world a better place to live, a place we call it our home. I spent 4 days which is 5 hours a day to finish the entire process, from the idea to the making the trailer. The process is not difficult but complicated. I draw the character on 2 pieces of A4 paper,scan it, render it in PS, then snap more than 2000 pictures. Well, this is my first try of making this video, yet, it is so much fun. ^^ Thanks to Amin, Acha and the gang for the idea. Thanks to Alia for helping to cut the character. This Bungalow sits in a suburb in Kota Kinabalu,Sabah, Malaysia. It is surrounded by houses and a basketball court. The challenge was to create a house that is opened to the outside and yet remained private for the clients. We also want natural air to flow within the house, making it energy efficient. We use practically all local materials in its construction. Exposed red bricks and tropical wood finishes gives this house a rustic and homey feeling. We use generous roof overhangs to screen out the harsh sunlight and heavy tropical rain. The large roof overhangs also help screens the occupants from neighbours' view. A green garden is introduced into the main entrance hallway. Visitors are greeted by green courtyard when entering the house. Semi- Private space like the Living and Dining area are not visible from the main entrance; it is screened off using carefully thought out placements of walls and partitions. The Living room looks into a large outdoor garden and a large Koi pond. One is also serenated by the soothing sound of the fountain from the Koi pond. A guestroom on the ground floor has a ensuite that opens into an open-air courtyard. The house is divided into different zones: Public Zone for the car porch and entrance hallway; Semi-Private Zone for the living and dining area; Service Zone for the kitchen, laundry, store and servants' quarter; and Private Zone for the bedrooms. One of the 19 nominees for the 11th Cycle of The Aga Khan Award for Architecture Location: Lunas, Kedah, Malaysia (South-East Asia) Architect: Laurence KY Loh Client: DIGI Telecommunications Completed: 2007 Design: 2006-2007 Site size: 340 m² Located in the small town of Lunas, in Kedah district near Penang, the Rubber Smokehouse stands as an example of Malaysia's industrial heritage and the rubber industry that was of vital importance to Malaysia's economy for much of the twentieth century. The preservation project brought together the different communities living in the area and created an awareness of their shared history. It also engaged Malaysian schoolchildren, who were charged with mapping and documenting a cultural history of their home. Sponsored by a local telecommunications company, the project was led by the architect Laurence Loh, whose family is originally from Lunas. The Rubber Smokehouse has been transformed from an abandoned and forgotten building into an important part of the town's landscape and a focus for the rural community. It has combined the physical conservation of the historic fabric with youth engagement, intercultural tolerance and civic pride, a unique approach that shows how architectural interventions can play a role in advancing social cohesion in multicultural societies.
