Africa's Deadly Brain Drain - Malawi
Duration : 1273 Seconds

Nov 2007 Africa is in the grip of a medical crisis because its doctors are being lured away by lucrative jobs in Europe. Malawi now only has one doctor for every 50000 people. "We are working under very difficult conditions. It's like we are in a war", laments Robert Lapyam Ayella, the only doctor at Mulanje District Hospital. As he goes from bed to bed, patients and staff clamour for his attention. But there are too many people for him to see and he lacks the proper drugs and equipment to treat them. "You reach a point of frustration and just say 'what am I doing here?'" In some Malawian hospitals, clinical officers without the proper training are working as doctors or surgeons. "I usually work 24 hour shifts in the emergency department", states clinical officer Stanley Chimabaui. Malawi's few remaining health workers also have to battle an AIDS pandemic. And the problem looks set to get worse. 25% of the country's health staff are expected to die of HIV/AIDS in the next decade. Facing these problems, it's not surprising entire medical classes decide to emigrate to the West, where they can earn 300 -- 400 times more. As one expat Malawian doctor states: "I earn a good wage in England. Why should I go back to Malawi to suffer?" Produced by SBS/Dateline Distributed by Journeyman Pictures

Homosexuals in Malawi begin Gay Rights Movement
Duration : 92 Seconds

Even when Malawi has an active population of approximately hundred thousand homosexuals, they never have come publicly to express themselves because of country's repressive laws. Malawi constitution outlaws homosexuality and it's a criminal offence punishable by imprisonment with hard labor. But contrary to this, gays now have decided to come forth because they want their views to be heard, treated equally and protected like a normal Malawian citizens. For this purpose, Malawian homosexuals have formed an association that is named as Malawi Gay Rights Movement. This Movement will surely press Malawi society and constitution to accept Gays, as the people meeting in the homosexual community are prominent business persons, politicians, artists, journalists and clerics. Malawi's always active gay population yearn for recognition, but it remains to be seen as to how long will it take for the constitution in particular to decriminalize homosexuality and society in general to accept them . However, it seems that they have to wait little too longer to find well-wishers and meet equal treatment. www.instablogs.com

Traditional Malawian Dance
Duration : 55 Seconds

This dance, called malipenga, was performed in my village (Champhira, in the northern region of Malawi) for a community event. It's always performed by elderly men, and the costurmes were inspired by the uniforms worn by European soldiers during world war 2. During colonial rule, African men were taken to Europe to join in fighting there, but they found the clothes amusing, and took some of the ideas back home.

Malawian Refugees Flee Hostility in South Africa
Duration : 100 Seconds

CHAN: Malawians who fled to South Africa to escape the violence and poverty of their home country are now fleeing in the opposite direction. THis is after many instances of anti-Malawian violence in South Africa. Here's more: NARRATED: South Africa has been a popular destination for Malawians to live and work. Now they are heading for home in large numbers, fleeing the wave of anti-migrant bloodshed in South Africa that's claimed the lives of at least 50 African foreigners. Some now back in Malawi say they were lucky to get away at all. SOUNDBITE: George Tambani, Malawian returnee, saying (Chichewa): "I ran away and slept in a bush. But when I went back to report for work an angry mob attacked me. I managed to escape but they stabbed me. They failed to kill me but they hit me over the head with a club and beat me all over my body." Malawi's government says it plans to lay on buses to ferry its endangered, stranded citizens out of South Africa. The violence has shocked many Malawians. SOUNDBITE: Emmanuel Kaliyeka, Malawian citizen, saying (English): "What's happening in South Africa so far is really inhuman." SOUNDBITE: Ndaona Chauluka, Malawian citizen, saying (English): "If my country decides today to chase South Africans what going to happen next? We're going to cause a war. We don't need that." Over the weekend protesters have been on the march in Johannesburg to demand an end to the violence. South Africa's ruling ANC has been holding meetings and rallies also urging ...

Early African Guitar 1967 - Daniel Kachamba (Malawi).webm
Duration : 370 Seconds

Daniel James Kachamba was born in Limbe, Blantyre District, Malawi, in 1947. He was born in a musical family. His father, James Kachamba, was a guitarist of the earliest period of popular township music in what was then Nyasaland, during the late 1940s, after he had returned as a World War II veteran from Burma. Daniel's mother, Etinala B. Gwede, was also musically inclined, having played the nkangala (mouth bow). His life-long partner and the second pillar in his early kwela-style band of the 1960s was his young brother Donald Kachamba, born 1953, who himself has become a musician/composer of international renown. Exposed to the popular music of the time in Malawi, saba-saba, sinjonjo, vula matambo, jive, and kwela music, Kachamba's guitar style varied from alternate bass line thumbpicking with index finger doing the melody à la country blues stylings of Mississippi John Hurt, to rumba bass patterns underneath syncopated melodic lines (also thumb and index) to condense the sounds of Congolese rumba on to one guitar.

African Union Summit
Duration : 115 Seconds

African Union leaders consider increasing military force and discuss ICC International Criminal Court's arrest warrant for Sudanese president Omar al-Bashir on war crime charges. Just a few minutes away from a blast that killed 76 people in Uganda earlier this month, delegates in the African Union debate increasing the role of the organization's military force. The African Union (AU) will likely remove the cap on the number of troops in AMISOM, but probably will not get permission to attack al-Shabaab in Somalia, which claimed responsibility for the blast. [Jean Ping, African Union Commission Chairman] "We need additional equipment adapted to the new mandate into attack instead of defence. So we need this equipment and we have asked for five helicopters already for that." The summit also addressed the ICC International Criminal Court's arrest warrant for Sudanese President Omar al-Bashir on war crimes charges. President of Malawi and current chairman of the AU Bingu wa Mutharika says the warrant undermines African solidarity. [Bingu wa Mutharika, President of Malawi and AU Chairperson] "The issuance of a warrant of arrest for his excellency al-Bashir, a duly elected president of the Sudan, is a violation of the principles of sovereignty. To subject a sovereign head of state to a warrant of arrest is undermining African solidarity and African peace and security that we fought for, for so many years." African countries are divided about whether they should arrest al-Bashir ...

Spark Africa - Dutch bicycle ambulances saves lives in Malawi - Episode 13
Duration : 204 Seconds

In Malawi there is a shortage of ambulances and many roads are in a bad condition. As a consequence, many pregnant women and their children die because they do not arrive in time at the hospital. Dutch trader Peter Meyer came up with a solution: the bicycle ambulance. 3 years ago he started Sakaramenta, which now employs 14 people. The Dutchman and his team sell over 60 bikes per month to hospitals and NGOs.News about Africa is very often filled with stereotyped images of famine, war and disease. But there is also another side to the continent. Fast-growing economies and investment opportunities. The Dutch production company Interactive Africa focuses its lens precisely on the innovative side of Africa with its online video reports Spark Africa. Also visit: www.africa-interactive.com Spark Africa is about innovative developments you hear little about. All the items are produced by African journalists and cameramen which creates a different dynamics compared to when a white European crew is used. Among other fascinating reports comprising this 20-episodes video series, we take a look at how for example an entrepreneur from Friesland in the Netherlands has established a successful dairy business in Tanzania and how students from the University of Nairobi, Kenya, came about to invent a bicycle charger for mobile phones. The video reportages are a mix of portraits of Dutch entrepreneurs in Africa, African inventors and reports on fast-growing industries like the outsourcing ...
