Me and 2 other students renovated an classroom in Malawi, an country in southern Africa. This room one of two technical classrooms that are part of the Henry Henderson Institute (also known as HHI) primary and secondary school in Blantyre, and it has been for over 14 years that these rooms were used. HHI was build by the British around 1960 and because this country generally doesnt maintain its buildings, cars, machines and such, everything is in a bad shape. Our project lasted from the 26th of January 2009 until the 21st of April 2009. This is the first film in a series of 4 short films that I made for my school project. This one is about all of the first impressions we had from this country.

On the road from Blantyre to Bangula in Malawi. The road, which is two-lane and paved, was paid for mostly by other nations. Since Malawian currency is just about worthless and Mozambique is hostile to Malawi due to some military engagements in the recent past, nobody can get gas so nobody actually _drives_ cars. The truck we were in ran on diesel, which is in slightly better supply- mostly because of Mozambiquan smugglers. It's still hoarded like crazy and there is vigorous interest when tanker trucks pull up to pumping stations. The one vehicle you see us passing is a van loaded to the gills with paying passengers; the cost to ride on one of those is approximately a week's gross wages in the poverty-stricken southern region. Malawi is a nice place and the people are cheerful and safe to be around, but it is an extremely poor nation.
