This tank was set up December 2005. This was a Christmas present for me from my husband, to house my everly growing collection of African Cichlids. I still have some of my original cichlids. Big Momma, one of my labs in MANY of my videos, was purchased as a breeding adult when I got her, so, I never got to watch her grow. AND, I have NO IDEA how old she was when I got her. She surprized me the first week I brought her home by spitting about 30 baby labs in my tank. Hence the name, big momma. She always spit 20-30 babies at a time. Since I'm guessing she is at LEAST five years old, she is probably my oldest cichlid. She has not had babies for about a year now. Anyway, some specs on this tank This tank is 90 US gallons. An all glass aquarium with matching oak hood and stand. Lighting is standard hood twin Coralife one is 5500K and the other is 10000K heating: Two visitherm stealth 200 watt heaters One in tank the other in my overflow. This tank contains about 200 pounds of lace rock and about 50 pounds of moon rock, and bagged crushed coral is in my sump. My tap water is very soft and acidic, the buffering from the moon rocks and crushed coral helps. I also use Seachem Malawi buffer and Cichlid Lake Salts I DO NOT use Aquarium salt and I DO NOT use carbon. I wouldn't even use the ...

Anna's parents on safari! Using our own 4WD we crossed the border from Malawi into Zambia to the South Luangwa National Park, staying at Mfuwe Lodge. We had 4 great days here, and as if we hadn't had enough elephants we also spent some time in Malawi's Liwonde National Park. This park seems to be stuffed with elephant. In fact it's practically bursting at the seams with pachyderms. Anyway, it was fun, if you like big scary animals.

Meet some of the children that we welcome to The Lilongwe Wildlife Centre, Malawi. Thanks to volunteer Dawn Clark for putting this together with the pictures she took during her time with us. As a centre for the people of Malawi we believe we can make a real difference to conservation through education programmes. That is why the wildlife centre welcomes over 10000 children through the gates, many of whom are from the poorest regions of Lilongwe. The children get to take a tour of the wildlife centre and view our residents, and for many this is the only opportunity they will have in their life time to see these animals. We also offer structured educational classes so we can teach them more about their natural habitat and how they can help preserve it. They also get to use our adventure playground, the biggest in the country!
