Pop star Madonna hosted a star studded event on Wednesday(February 6) on the lawns of the United Nations to aid Malawi orphans, the UN Children's Fund (UNICEF) and -- controversially -- to celebrate a new Gucci store. Madonna and 11-year-old daughter Lourdes Leon walked the red carpet before heading inside the event. Actors Gwyneth Paltrow, Drew Barrymore, Demi Moore, Ashton Kutcher, and a very pregnant Jennifer Lopez were among many stars that turned up for the dinner that Gucci Creative Director Frida Giannini said has already raised $3.7 million (USD). "This evening, what I really want to do is put Raising Malawi on the map," Madonna told Reuters. "I want credibility as a philanthropic organization. I want it inspire people. I don't want them to just write me a check, I want them to give me a piece of their heart." Gucci, which is owned by French retailer PPR has paid for the entire event and said all money raised will be split between Raising Malawi and UNICEF. But critics have questioned the use of the UN grounds to celebrate a new Gucci store and raised concerns about ties between Madonna's charity Raising Malawi and The Kabbalah Centre, a mystical form of Judaism practiced by the pop star. The accusations, made mainly by bloggers, appear to stem from the fact that Raising Malawi's founder Michael Berg is also co-director of The Kabbalah Centre. When I visited Manyamula Village this summer to see the work of Spirit in Action, I was inspired by the stories of empowerment and change in the village. A small grant from SIA helped create a chicken farm, which produces a loan fund for 55 community members. These members are now running their own savings and loans institution and are empowered actors in their community's economic development! Zimbabwean Movie makes history at the Prince Charles Theatre in London The hit movie "The Gentleman " premièred in the United Kingdom, London showcasing Zimbabwean actors for the first time at the luxurious Prince Charles Theatre where other Hollywood films are shown . Executive Producer Sylvia Chimhina arrived in the UK on the 24 th of March joining Munya Chidzonga from Big Brother Africa and also Zimbabweans, Award winning Director Joe Njagu attended the glamorous red carpet premiere at the Prince Charles Cinema in London's Leicester Sq on Saturday 24 March 2012. The Gentleman which was released in October last year has already won director, Joe Njagu an award at the American International Film Festival for best "Best Director" in the foreign language category, with Munya winning the National Arts Merit Award for "Outstanding Male". Movie critics have praised the producers for raising the standards of the Zimbabwean film industry and for making a truly Pan -African film which has a cast from Zimbabwe, South Africa and Malawi. The Gentleman is a sweeping story of a young man put in a moral dilemma is forced to choose between saving his dying wife or going against his beliefs.
