Lake Malawi National Park
Duration : 160 Seconds

Located at the southern end of the great expanse of Lake Malawi, with its deep, clear waters and mountain backdrop, the national park is home to many hundreds of fish species, nearly all endemic. TODAY IN HISTORY - Comoros and Malawi Indepedence Day - 06 July 2010
Duration : 63 Seconds

Today, July 6, Comoros and Malawi celebrate their Independence Days. Comoros gained its sovereignty in 1975. It is an archipelago situated at the northern end of the Mozambique Channel in southern Africa. Historically involved in trade in the area, it reflects African, Arabic, Malagasy, and French influences. The nation has been referred to as the "perfumed islands" for its fragrant flora. Located in southern Africa east of Zambia, Malawi observes its autonomy attained in 1964. Lake Malawi National Park, a United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization World Heritage Site, is one of the world's largest freshwater lakes and is known for its vast variety of fish. Famous Malawians include prominent poet, playwright, and novelist Mr. Steve Chimombo and acclaimed painter Mr. Nyangu Chodola. We wish the kind citizens of comoros and Malawi a fine Independence Day.

The Vimbuza Healing Dance
Duration : 314 Seconds

UNESCO: Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity - 2008 URL: www.unesco.org Description: Vimbuza is a healing dance popular among the Tumbuka people living in northern Malawi. It is an important manifestation of the ngoma, a healing tradition found throughout Bantu-speaking Africa. Ngoma, meaning drums of affliction, carries considerable historical depth and, despite various attempts over the years to suppress it, remains a fundamental part of indigenous healthcare systems. Most patients are women who suffer from various forms of mental illness. They are treated for some weeks or months by renowned healers who run a temphiri, a village house where patients are accommodated. After being diagnosed, patients undergo a healing ritual. For this purpose, women and children of the village form a circle around the patient, who slowly enters into a trance, and sing songs to call helping spirits. The only men taking part are those who beat spirit-specific drum rhythms and, in some cases, a male healer. Singing and drumming combine to create a powerful experience, providing a space for patients to dance their disease. Its continually expanding repertoire of songs and complex drumming, and the virtuosity of the dancing are all part of the rich cultural heritage of the Tumbuka people. The Vimbuza healing ritual goes back to the mid-nineteenth century, when it developed as a means of overcoming traumatic experiences of oppression, and it further developed as ...

The Gule Wamkulu
Duration : 181 Seconds

UNESCO: Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity - 2008 URL: www.unesco.org Description: Gule Wamkulu was a secret cult, involving a ritual dance practiced among the Chewa in Malawi, Zambia, and Mozambique. It was performed by members of the Nyau brotherhood, a secret society of initiated men.Within the Chewas traditional matrilineal society, where married men played a rather marginal role, the Nyau offered a means to establish a counterweight and solidarity among men of various villages. Nyau members still are responsible for the initiation of young men into adulthood, and for the performance of the Gule Wamkulu at the end of the initiation procedure, celebrating the young mens integration into adult society. Gule Wamkulu is performed in the season following the July harvest, but it can also be seen at weddings, funerals, and the installation or the death of a chief. On these occasions, the Nyau dancers wear costumes and masks made of wood and straw, representing a great variety of characters, such as wild animals, spirits of the dead, slave traders as well as more recent figures such as the honda or the helicopter. Each of these figures plays a particular, often evil, character expressing a form of misbehavior, teaching the audience moral and social values. These figures perform dances with extraordinary energy, entertaining and scaring the audience as representatives of the world of the spirits and the dead. Gule Wamkulu dates back to the ...

CHICHEWA Channel for Malawian children. Story No 1. le 21 mars 2012 06:20 (PDT)
Duration : 566 Seconds

A bedtime story for all Malawian children! Chichewa is an endangered language. Malawi, now being a home to many immigrants, is favouring the use of English in business and administrative matters. Some children born to Malawian parents do not even speak Chichewa which really is unforgivable. A language is not only a means of communication between peoples but a vector of cultural mores. A language safeguards traditions and folklore and a history of a certain people. It is time for us Malawians at home and abroad to reclaim our heritage and speak to each other and to our children in this beautiful tongue that is Chichewa. We need to help Chichewa adapt and grow and become dynamic so as to keep up with the pressures that modernity places on it in this fast-paced changing world. I always think that the first place to start is with our children. So, our first story : Anyani atatu ndi Nangondo.

Struggle for Freedom: Our Heritage
Duration : 374 Seconds

A new exhibition, A Struggle for Freedom: Our African Heritage, commemorates the slave prisoners whose hardships on the island stretched over two centuries -- from the days of Eva, Catharina and Maria in the mid-1650s to the mid-1830s. Their origins are often indicated in the name whereas others were named after the month they arrived or the master they served. The majority of Cape slaves (41 150 in total) came from Africa and Madagascar -- initially from Angola and the Guinea coast, later from East and Central Africa (Mozambique, Malawi, Zambia and Congo). In addition, there were 17 315 slaves from India and 13 545 from the Indonesian islands. The exhibition features photos of Robben Island and other Unesco World Heritage sites in Africa and Brazil that are historically entwined with slavery. The triangular slave trade between Europe, Africa and the Americas has created striking similarities across the continents. For instance, the colourful architecture of the Brazilian city Salvador de Bahia bears an uncanny resemblance to the Bo Kaap, Cape Town's Malay quarter. GULE WAMKULU, la grande danza.m4v
Duration : 111 Seconds

Golden Jubilee of the Lundu Paramountcy
Duration : 13 Seconds

On February 6, 2009, Paramount Chief Lundu of southernmost Malawi celebrated the 40th anniversary of his paramountcy. In 1968, a few years after independence president Dr. H. Kamuzu Banda reinstated the Lundu incumbent at the time as paramount chief for the Chewa and Mang'anja people. Lundu had lost the paramoutncy at the hands of the Kololo men who usurped power in the Lower Shire Valley in the mid-1860s having come as servants to Dr. David Livingstone. The current Lundu is the third of these post-independence paramount chiefs. As much as the celebrations can be appreciated, they also demonstrate the shallowness of historical awareness in Malawi. Archaeological research in the area demonstrated that the Lundu chieftaincy goes back to at least the 11th century. A millennium celebration would just have been more appropriate. This archaeological research let to the establishement of Mlambe Foundation (2005) and Tisunge! Lower Shire Heritage Centre (2006).
