Highlights from the 'Food for Malawi' fashion show that was held in Barony Hall, Strathclyde University, November 2008. Organised by Tartans for Africa, the show featured designs from a number of sources: established designers such as Loraine of Hide & Sleek Designs and Edinburgh-based Thai national Narong, and up-and-coming designers such as the 'Gala Girls' contributed with a number of outfits. An audience of 800 gave the models and flagbearers from Glasgow's Holyrood High School an incredible welcome, and in turn were treated to a super show, fronted by the Master of Ceremonies Liz Cameron, the Lord Provost of Glasgow. Fourteen tartans made their debut: Ghana, Malawi, Kenya, South Africa, Tanzania, Zimbabwe, DR Congo, Mozambique, Nigeria, Ethiopia, Lesotho, Rwanda, Uganda and Zambia.

Pop star Madonna hosted a star studded event on Wednesday(February 6) on the lawns of the United Nations to aid Malawi orphans, the UN Children's Fund (UNICEF) and -- controversially -- to celebrate a new Gucci store. Madonna and 11-year-old daughter Lourdes Leon walked the red carpet before heading inside the event. Actors Gwyneth Paltrow, Drew Barrymore, Demi Moore, Ashton Kutcher, and a very pregnant Jennifer Lopez were among many stars that turned up for the dinner that Gucci Creative Director Frida Giannini said has already raised $3.7 million (USD). "This evening, what I really want to do is put Raising Malawi on the map," Madonna told Reuters. "I want credibility as a philanthropic organization. I want it inspire people. I don't want them to just write me a check, I want them to give me a piece of their heart." Gucci, which is owned by French retailer PPR has paid for the entire event and said all money raised will be split between Raising Malawi and UNICEF. But critics have questioned the use of the UN grounds to celebrate a new Gucci store and raised concerns about ties between Madonna's charity Raising Malawi and The Kabbalah Centre, a mystical form of Judaism practiced by the pop star. The accusations, made mainly by bloggers, appear to stem from the fact that Raising Malawi's founder Michael Berg is also co-director of The Kabbalah Centre. This year, Dsenyo has made leaps and bounds developing relationships with our producer groups and creating new Made in Malawi products. Founder, Marissa Perry Saints, spent a total of 3 months in Malawi over two separate trips. This slideshow showcases the six producer groups now working with Dsenyo. One of the main principles of Fair Trade is establishing long term relationships with producers. Returning frequently to place orders takes many of these groups by surprise. They are accustomed to seeing aid workers come and go on short contracts and often seeing projects fail to reach completion. They are grateful for the partnership with Dsenyo and for the opportunity that each purchase here in the USA makes for them back in Malawi. I Am Because We Are is a 2008 documentary directed by Nathan Rissman and written, narrated and produced by Madonna. This movie documents the concern over the millions of orphans in the African country of Malawi who have lost parents and siblings to HIV and AIDS, many of whom live on the streets. The film also shows the efforts with Madonna's charitable organisation Raising Malawi in helping with improving their lives and conditions. Madonna said about the film: "To say that this film is a labor of love is trivial. It's also the journey of a lifetime. I hope you all are as inspired watching it as I was making it."
