NetworkNewsToday: MALAWI: FOOD INSECURITY, CROPS, IRRIGATION, MARKETS & RURAL LIVELIHOODS (WORLD BANK)
Duration : 147 Seconds

NetworkNewsToday: 12 January 2009 - - World Bank: Malawi - Although a fertile country, Malawi is prone to drought and disease. Its farmers live under the constant threat of crop failure and food insecurity. From irrigation systems to getting produce to market, the country's agricultural system is now being overhauled. The new irrigation system is a cause for celebration in Malawi's Kanyelae village. Over 80 percent of Malawis people are smallholder farmers. Agriculture is the main source of income for the country, making up nearly 90 percent of Malawis exports. SOUNDBITE (Chichewa) Alistariko Samisoa, Headman, Kanyela Village, Salima District: We started this irrigation scheme to improve our yield. The food we were producing from rain-fed fields was inadequate The government, with help from the World Bank is investing in affordable irrigation systems and offering farmers technical advice and marketing support. SOUNDBITE (English) Patrick Kabambe, Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Local Government: We need to tackle the problems of the inconsistent rainfall patterns and the solution was through irrigation development, but secondly it was to address the problem of imports; that is why the government came up with a subsidy program. Through local farmer based organizations like "A Farmers Fund" in Chisomo, farmers have been encouraged to work collectively and to plan in advance. "A Farmers Fund" has been set up by the government to help expand basic food production and develop ...

How Mobile Banking Can Transform Development
Duration : 192 Seconds

Mobile money (mMoney) can transform development. All of the sudden, we live in a world where you don't need to build a bank to serve families with savings and loans services -- you can simply use a phone. Today, people can store money instantaneously using their phone. They can also send money seamlessly to friends and family in need. This accelerates financial inclusion for the 1.8 billion people with access to a phone but not a bank. It also contributes to USG goals like improving transparency, rooting out corruption, and enabling the private sector and local entrepreneurs to solve public problems. In a world with 500000 bank branches and 4 billion phones, mMoney shifts the financial paradigm.

New Hope for Malawi - NHCF Orphan Appeal 2010 - Part 1
Duration : 824 Seconds

www.newhope4malawi.org.uk nhcf@hotmail.co.uk This is an appeal from the New Hope Children's Foundation (NHCF). The founders and directors of NHCF are Roy and Shelly Maloney (based in Devon, UK). NHCF is a registered charity in Malawi. The "New Hope Centre" orphanage seen in this video was built in Malawi from the ground-up. The New Hope Centre provides food, clothing, shelter, protection, and education for many of the starving and neglected local children. Generous donations and support helped to get us this far. However, we are still in need of help and donations for food, clothing, and bedding for the orphans. We are also in need of equipment and books for the New Hope Centre. If you would like to lend your support to this project or to donate, please visit our web site (link above). We also gratefully accept many types of clothing and items within the UK that we can sell to buy food and clothing for the orphans. Please contact us if you have any items which you would like to donate. We can collect certain items from in and around the Torbay area. We have also recently set up some clothing banks in the local area. Please drop us an e-mail or call us for further details (number at end of video). Providing the orphans with food and warmth is obviously an ongoing priority, so any help or support you can give is hugely appreciated. Thank you for your time. New Hope Children's Foundation. "Supporting orphans since 2005".

Economic Security - Strength in Numbers
Duration : 394 Seconds

The microcredit revolution that brought support for poor families in South America and Asia has not been as effective in Africa, mainly because of the long distances between the recipients and the banks. A new way had to be found. This is the story of an innovative program called Village Saving and Loans, implemented by the organization CARE, which guided small groups of individuals (mainly women) to create their own banks. This revolutionary program requires no capital input and spreads spontaneously throughout the community lifting thousands of families out of poverty.

"Lake Malawi, looks more like a Sea :)" Kasnsqueak's photos around Chitimba, Malawi
Duration : 66 Seconds

A TripAdvisor™ TripWow slideshow of a travel blog to Chitimba, Malawi by TravelPod blogger Kasnsqueak titled "Lake Malawi, looks more like a Sea :)" Kasnsqueak's travel blog entry: "Sunday 16th August. Up before the sun is a usual camp day for us and we packed in the predawn light and had a quick brekky of coffee and weetbix before hitting the road again. Today we leave Tanzania and head south into Malawi. Reading on the truck I have read a Paul Theroux book called Dark Star Africa and another African book called Gone to the Dogs and now I am on a book about an Irish lady of 60 cycling through Africa by Dervla Murphy called The Ukimwi Road from Kenya to Zimbabwe. Such long drives mean I can read heaps of books and these ones are relevant to where we are travelling so give a rich background for my travels. The book swapping on the truck is great and allows us to share these excellent books. We crossed the border into Malawi and instantly realised it is a much poorer country as the shops had very little to sell and in the main supermarket no meat at all so it was my groups cooking night so it was canned vegetable curry and vegies with pasta for dinner tonight. We got to our campsite beside the town of Chitimba on the banks of the stunningly massive lake Malawi. This lake is so big that you cannot see the other side , it is like an inland sea. The camp was lovely and right on the banks of the lake but mozzies were about so we needed to be vigilant. My group cooked the dinner ...

Duration : 21 Seconds

Here's Spike, looking remarkably well only one day into quarantine at Lilongwe Wildlife Centre after a rather stressful experience. He was rescued from some hunters digging up sand banks with dogs and he was tied up with wire awaiting his fate, which is likely to have been the cooking pot, with his quills used for curios. He will soon be released back into the wild where he belongs.
