Most of the work from Vogel exhibited here pertains to undines: "liquid women", bewitching and tragic. Several paintings deal more specifically with a quintessential theme of romantic symbolism, the drowning Ophelia. Vogel's postmodern reexamination of the opheliac disappearance introduces subtle and complex nuances in the representation of feminity: Ophelia doesn't drown, she withdraws from us. This feminity with an attitude is very different from the symbolist's victimized staging of feminity. Two antithetical avix cross each other to revisit the undine semiotic space. On a first dichotomy, the overexposed body contrasts with the thick darkness of the sleeping waters. On a second one, more complex, the ostentatious disclosure of nudity clashes with the dismissive looks of the women. Contrived stances and cold indifference work in two conflicting and irreconcilable directions. The painter's "manner" further emphasizes this duality. The meticulous execution, lavishly exposing the corporal envelop in utmost details, is balanced by the subtle body language of emotions, all expressed by minute nuances of posture, looks and pouts. As a result, this whole sphere of antithetical feelings renews from top to bottom the foundation of the symbolist universe. A VERY VICTORIAN PASSION: The Orchid Paintings of John Day PHILLIP CRIBB & MICHAEL TIBBS Book Number: 68676 Product format: Hardback Tottenham in North London might seem an unlikely setting for one of the finest orchid collections and home of one of the most avid of all orchid collectors. Yet it was the home of John Day and his orchid glasshouses for most of his life. Day (1824-1888) was an eminent orchid grower who from 1862 also began to paint watercolours of the plants in his own collection at High Cross. His paintings of over 2300 orchids, bound in 53 'scrapbooks' constitute a unique archive of these beautiful flowers from around the world and introduced England to orchidmania. Species of orchid have been found throughout subtropical and tropical Asia, Africa and Madagascar, the tropical Americas, Cambodia and the rainforests plus the most famous collections of the time, and Day was able to paint the first flowering of many newly cultivated wild orchids. He was a frequent visitor to the major nurseries and the Royal Botanic Gardens at Kew as well as the salesrooms in London which sold the newly imported orchids. Amateur growers such as S. Rucker, W. Marriott and Sir Trevor Lawrence sent him plants to paint too. The paintings are not only gloriously beautiful they are of real scientific value. My life began in a small tourist town by the sea in Italy in 1966. My early love for the sea still inspires my paintings today. Because of this passion, the majority of my work rarely drifts away from the depiction of water and movement. I believe my style is bold with the uses of distortion of form, colour and perspective to create a dramatic flow within the composition. My aspiration is to create works that I believe in and that people can continue to enjoy and treasure.

The Exposition Universelle of 1900 was a world's fair held in Paris, France, to celebrate the achievements of the past century and to accelerate development into the next. The style that was universally present in the Exposition was Art Nouveau. The exhibition lasted from 15 April until 12 November 1900. More than 50 million people attended the exhibition (a world record at the time), it turned a profit for the French government of 7000000 Francs. The fair included more than 76000 exhibitors and covered 1.12 square kilometres of Paris. A number of Paris' most noted structures were built for the Exposition, including the Gare de Lyon, the Gare d'Orsay (now the Musée d'Orsay), the Pont Alexandre III, the Grand Palais, La Ruche, and the Petit Palais. The first line of the Paris Metro also began operation to coincide with the Exposition. Although completed in just 18 months, it was nevertheless slightly late, taking its first paying passengers to the Ancien Palais du Trocadéro site on 19 July 1900. The Salle des Machines ("Machines' Room") was later turned into an indoor cycling track, the Vélodrome d'hiver, which became infamous during Vichy France.
