Gogol Bordello is a Gypsy punk band from the Lower East Side of Manhattan, formed in 1999 and known for theatrical stage shows and persistent touring. Much of the band's sound is inspired by Gypsy music. The band incorporates minor-key accordion and violin (and on some albums, saxophone) mixed with punk and dub. The band has appeared in a number of independent films, most notably in 2005's Everything Is Illuminated in which the lead singer, Eugene Hütz, co-starred with Elijah Wood in a dramedy and adventure story about the Nazi purges in Ukraine. The entire group was present for one shot in which they played a brass band in a set that included the Star Spangled Banner. They also played the traditional Yiddish tune Bublitschki (little bagels). Gogol Bordello contributed the song "Start Wearing Purple" to the film's score. "Gogol" comes from the name Nikolai Gogol. As one of the most influential writers in Ukrainian and Russian literature, Gogol paved the way for the likes of Kafka and Dostoyevsky. He also serves as an ideological influence for the band because he "smuggled" Ukrainian culture into Russian society, which Gogol Bordello intends to do with Gypsy/ East-European music in the English-speaking world. "Bordello", in Italian, refers to a brothel or a "gentleman's club". The band was originally titled Hütz and the Béla Bartóks, but Eugene Hütz says that they decided to change the name because "nobody knows who the hell Béla Bartók is in the United States". Pérez graduated from the University of Havana with a degree in Language and Spanish Literature, and began working in the Cuban film industry in 1971 as an assistant director, before directing his first documentary in 1975. His feature debut was the drama Clandestinos (1987) but it wasn't until Madagascar (1994) that he garnered significant international recognition. Pérez later directed La Vida es Silbar (1998) and Suite Habana (2003). Suite Habana is considered by some critics to be the best Cuban film in decades. Variety hailed it as "A lyrical, meticulously-crafted and unexpectedly melancholy homage to the battered but resilient inhabitants of a battered but resilient city." Today, June 26, is the National Day of Madagascar, celebrating its independence gained in 1960. This island country is in southern Africa, east of Mozambique. The gorgeous Rainforests of the Atsinanana display remarkable biodiversity and a large number of endemic species of plants and animals. Tsingy de Bemaraha Strict Nature Reserve has a variety of landscapes and is home to rare lemurs and birds. Both locations are United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization World Heritage Sites. Famous Malagasy include Jean-Joseph Rabéarivelo, considered to be Madagascar's father of modern literature, and award-winning playwright and novelist Michèle Rakotoson. May the gracious people of Madagascar have an auspicious National Day.

Interviewing Dr Allan Hunter on the role of Creativity in our Life. An in deepth interview providing real wisdom and knowledge on the purpose and gift of creativity. Creativity and self expression leads us to oneness, connection and living our life purpose, allowing spirit and life to flow through us. Allan was born and educated in England, living in Surrey and Oxfordshire before moving to Boston and becoming a naturalized American citizen. In his youth he lived in Belgium, Italy (Sardinia), and Madagascar as well as England. He received a doctorate at Oxford University in literature with a focus on Joseph Conrad. After graduating he traveled to India, South Africa, Peru, Tunisia and all through Europe. He worked for a time with disturbed adolescents before teaching literature at Farleigh-Dickinson University in Wroxton, England. After moving to Boston he began teaching at Curry College where he is a full professor. He has also taught prisoners in Massachusetts jails and has a counseling practice. His work with his father, Jim, an RAF prisoner of war during WW2, on a memoir, From Coastal Command To Captivity, led to an understanding of the ways memoir writing can heal trauma. Allan now teaches memoir at The Blues Hills Writing Institute at Curry College. In his spare time he restores antique motorcycles. Although African myths and folktales have long been trivialized as childish, translators today are revealing new insights, which show that Africa led the world in the invention of the most sophisticated literary styles. Critics now particularly value the figurality, or use of metaphor, which dominates the African literary imagination. The ethics and politics of translating African oral literature, or folklore, are a microcosm of ethical and political problems around the world. Populations of the Indian Ocean islands, almost unknown in the English speaking world, are loyal to the traditions they inherited from their slave ancestors, thus attesting to the power of the African imagination, but they rely on those traditions to help them negotiate the flow of money, imagery, and music, which we call globalization. This talk advocates for clearer understanding of such remote cultures. Speaker Biography: Lee Haring is professor emeritus of English at Brooklyn College. He conducted folklore research for thirty years in the islands of the Southwest Indian Ocean: Madagascar, Mauritius, Seychelles, Reunion, and the Comoros. His most recent book is a collection of the region's folktales, titled "Stars and Keys."
