Prior to his formal studies in architecture, in Istanbul and the US, Ali worked in the family trade as a stonemason in Cyprus. His experience in the industry ranges from small-scale residential through multi-million dollar commercial, institutional and historic preservation projects. Sustainability and sensitivity to context consistently guide his hand in design. Through happy coincidence he met Patricia Wright--a world renowned primatologist who has devoted twenty five years of her life to the study of lemurs and biodiversity in Madagascar. Her commitment to preserving biodiversity meshed with Ali's commitment towards sustainable design practice. That meeting has since led to a commission to design the research/residence hall in Ranomafana National Park in Madagascar. While using more advanced technologies to harvest rainwater and sun, the finished building will be clad in locally-fired clay brick and cut granite, reconnecting to the vernacular through the beauty of stone. Sur les hautes terres , l'architecture des maisons malgaches est presque totalement en brique. Elle est devenu une activité lucrative pour nombre de famille malgache. De mai en octobre, on peut voir dans certaines rizières la fabrication de brique. Ces terres argileuses sont prélevées des rizières, pétries, moulées et séchées. Par la suite, ces briques sont rangées pour former des fourneaux, que l'on peut observer sur les routes nationales, comme la RN.7 a Ambositra ou même à Tana le long des berges de l' Ikopa. La fabrication de brique constitue une menace pour l' environnement , car pour la cuisson, il faut utiliser beaucoup des bois. L es fabriquant de brique utilisent le bois d'eucalyptus pour la cuisson, pour eux c'est un moyen pour protéger l'environnement car ce bois régénèrent rapidement . Les terres argileuses de surface riches prélevées dans ces rizières ne se régénèrent que difficilement d'où la détérioration beaucoup de rizières .

First off I used a mini-bus to go into town, which everyone (especially Noro, our cook) thought was really funny. My dad couldn't understand why I wouldn't use the driver, or at the very least, a cab. I figure a cab is ten times more expensive than the bus, but at ten US cents versus a dollar, that's pretty much a moot point. The busses are crazy: I walked in and there were 20 people in a vehicle the size of a large US SUV. Thankfully, a sign said the maximum capacity was 20. So I was really surprised when they managed to fit 8 more people on board. Given that I about ten inches taller than anyone here, my body was ill suited for the ride: my knees were touching my neck. But it was still fun. On the way to the markets, I passed the Vanilla House , a building of typical Malagasy architecture. A Scottish architect designed the Queen's palace in the 18th century, and the style's been all the rage since then. Hence the houses here look like something torn from a European town. I also came across the old train station. The old parliament building on the Kossuth tér in Budapest must be disassembled, stone by stone. The building stones should be numbered and taken to Zanzibar or Madagascar for preservation. German archeologists could do an excellent work. It must be rebuild in Zanzibar or Madagascar. There should come a new, multifunctional building on the location of the old parliament.
