To understand this biodiversity, scientists use an intedisciplinary approach combining geology and biology to unravel the puzzle. Dr. Anne Yoder, Professor of Biology and Evolutionary Anthropology at Duke University, is the Director of the Duke Lemur Center. She talked with us about the evolutionary history of Madagascar.

Madagascar, the mysterious "Great Red Island" off the east African coast of Mozambique, was chosen as the venue for Camel Trophy 1987. The event's return to Africa also heralded the return of Range Rover as the preferred vehicle. It was not the ubiquitous V8 that drove the event this time but the new Italian VM powered 2400cc turbo-diesel. After an interval of five years, it was great to see Range Rover back where it performed best. Considered to be an ideal location, a vast variety of landscape, terrain, weather conditions, flora and fauna awaited the teams. From the tropical rainforests of the north, where storms and driving rain caused severe flooding, to the scorched savannah of the south, Madagascar provided a superb challenge. Once more fourteen countries sent teams on the 2252 km adventure from Diego Suarez on the northern tip of the island to Fort Dauphin at the southern end, the first ever continuous north-to-south journey by vehicle in Madagascar's history. At the end of sixteen days, Camel Trophy had exceeded everyone's expectations. The changeable Madagascan landscape produced exactly what was necessary for a classic Camel Trophy. However not all was well. The special tasks incorporated into the event in Madagascar proved woefully inadequate, badly designed, damaging to the vehicles and participants alike and almost impossible to score and judge with any accuracy at all. With Madagascar containing nearly two-third's of the world's chameleon species, Christopher Raxworthy, Associate Curator of Herpetology at the American Museum of Natural History, recently embarked on an expedition to the island in search of these special lizards. His hope was to track down the lined-chameleon in order to further study speciation on Madagascar. Having recently returned from Madagascar, Raxworthy brought back video footage of his research trip to give everyone a glimpse into his studies and what life is like for scientists in the field, including camping in remote villages, searching for specimens in the jungle and traversing the varied island landscape. While Raxworthy's recent findings must remain in Madagascar until the end of this current collection season, once he has the chameleon specimens at the Museum his work to classify and study the DNA will begin. Today, June 26, is the National Day of Madagascar, celebrating its independence gained in 1960. This island country is in southern Africa, east of Mozambique. The gorgeous Rainforests of the Atsinanana display remarkable biodiversity and a large number of endemic species of plants and animals. Tsingy de Bemaraha Strict Nature Reserve has a variety of landscapes and is home to rare lemurs and birds. Both locations are United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization World Heritage Sites. Famous Malagasy include Jean-Joseph Rabéarivelo, considered to be Madagascar's father of modern literature, and award-winning playwright and novelist Michèle Rakotoson. May the gracious people of Madagascar have an auspicious National Day.
