Le prix d'une bête est trop élevé et ici comme ailleurs, les banques ne prêtent qu'aux riches. Partant de ce constat, Stéphane Geay a conçu il ya dix ans, un projet singulier. Baptisé la ZOB, (la Zebu Overseas Bank), il propose à des épargnants français de placer un peu de leurs économies dans l'achat d'un zébu. La bête est ensuite confiée à une famille de paysans qui rembourse l'investissement grâce aux fruits du travail accompli à l'aide au zébu. Cette idée "farfelue" était en fait géniale. Le succès de l'opération a même dépassé toutes les espérances. During their whole life, a vast majority of the Madagascan farmers can't even manage to buy a zebu, despite the fact this animal is so useful to them. The cost of the beast is too high and like anywhere else, banks lend money only to the rich. Aware of this fact, Stéphane Geay devised an unusual project ten years ago. He named it the ZOB (Zebu Overseas Bank), and suggested to small French investors to invest some of their savings into the purchase of a zebu. The animal is then entrusted to a farmers' family who pays off the investment thanks to the fruits of their work accomplished by the zebu. This "silly" idea has proved to be brilliant in fact. The success of the operation even exceeded all expectations.

The Mozambique Channel, located between Madagascar on the east and Mozambique on the west, forms an important shipping route round the southern tip of Africa in to the Indian Ocean. The channel has a length of around 1600 km and a width of between 400 and 1000 km, reaching depths of up to 3000 m. The channel plays host to important ocean currents such as the Agulhas and Mozambique currents. The Mozambique Channel was formed when Madagascar began its separation from continental Africa during the break-up of the super-continent of Gondwanaland some 165 million years ago. In the mid-Eocene to the early Miocene the channel may have been spanned by a land bridge allowing terrestrial mammals to move between Madagascar and the mainland. At the northern entrances of the Mozambique Channel occur a number of islands, reefs and submarine banks. The largest land masses in this area are those of the Comoros Islands. With an area of 2170 km² this volcanic group consists of 4 main islands: Ngazidja, Nzwani, Mwali, Mayotte and several smaller islets that lie off the main islands. Farther in to the channel occur a trio of widely separated coral reefs and islands that form overseas possessions of France: Bassas da India, Juan de Nova and Île Europa. [Instructions en francais se trouvent ci-dessous] Ingredients (makes about 36 katles): 1 lb ground beef, 3 large potatoes, 1 onion, 1 1/2" fresh ginger, 4 cloves garlic, 1 1/2 t salt, 1 t pepper, 1 1/2 t curry, 1/2 t thyme, 1 t (1 cube) beef bouillon, 3 T fresh cilantro, 3 T fresh chives, 5 T flour, 1 egg. Dice potatoes and boil in water until tender. Drain, let cool, then mash roughly. Mince onions, ginger and garlic; blend in spices and seasonings. Mix all ingredients together in a large bowl and add additional flour if needed to make mix hold together when stirring. Form mix into small walnut-size balls and flatten slightly. Coat the bottom of a pan with coil and fry on both sides over medium heat until golden brown, about 2-3 minutes on each side. Ingredients (36 katles): 500g viande hachee, 3 pommes de terre, 1 oignon, 3 cm gingembre frais, 4 gousses d'ail, 1 1/2 cac sel, 1 cac poivre, 1 1/2 cac curry, 1/2 cac thym, 1 cac (1 cube) bouillon de boeuf, 3 cas coriandre frais, 3 cas ciboulette frais, 5 cas farine, 1 oeuf. Coupez les pommes de terre en des. Bouilliez dans l'eau jusqu'a ce qu'elles soient tendre. Egouttez, laissez refroidir puis en faire une puree. Hachez les oignons, l'ail, le gingembre et les fines herbes . Melangez tous les ingredients dans un bol. Faites des boulettes, applatez-les, et faites-les frire 2-3 minutes a chaque cote sur feu moyen. Mangez chaud ou tiede.

Globe Trekker's presenters take you on a tour of our top fifteen dive sites around the world. Starting with the Atlantic & Caribbean, we go diving with Justine Shapiro in Dominica, and travel west to Turks & Caicos where Megan McCormick goes diving for conch. The next spot on our list takes us to the Outer Banks off North Carolina with Holly Morris, who encounters some very large sharks. We then travel to Florida's Gulf Coast where Holly has a close encounter with a very friendly manatee. We then head over to Africa's east coast to the island of Madagascar, for some wreck diving with Ian Wright. Heading north, we go for a beautiful dive in the Red Sea with Justine Shapiro. We continue our diving trip around the world to the Maldives, where Megan goes on several beautiful dives. From there we hit the Banda Islands in Indonesia's Celebes Sea, joining Mark Crowdy on a dive there. Our journey takes on to the Philippines with Shilpa Mehta. From there we head further east, to the South Pacific, where Ian takes in some wreck diving in the Solomons, and feeds some sharks in Fiji. In Micronesia, Megan goes on several amazing dives in Jellyfish Lake, and she gets very close to some large and gentle manta rays. After that we follow Megan to the fabled Great Barrier Reef, where we see the kind of diving that has made it famous. Brown Center maintains a repository of leaf samples preserved in silica gel that are made available to support molecular studies of plant systematics and evolution. This collection comprises over 11000 accessioned samples, collected from 55 countries and representing 368 families and 2502 genera. About 1600 samples have been distributed, the majority to US-based researchers. Fifteen countries are represented by more than 100 samples (the top four being the United States, Madagascar, New Caledonia, and Bolivia), as are seventeen angiosperm families (by far the most strongly represented being Asteraceae, with over 2200 samples). Over 400 bryophyte samples are also available. The collection therefore has great potential to facilitate the efficient and affordable conduct of molecular systematic studies. The distribution of samples reflects the Garden's international partnerships and collectors' interests; since such biases are probably inevitable, a national network of DNA banks is essential to provide comprehensive support to the botanical research community.
